The Ghost-hunter
I am a ghost-hunter. I hunt ghosts and when I catch them I take them away to a special castle on
an island north of Scotland.
There they can rattle their chains and make loudly noises. There they can wait quietly for other
ghosts and say ‘Boo!’ and laugh happily when the other ghosts are afraid. But what they cannot do
there is frighten people like you and me.
I mean, I’m not frightened easily anyway. A ghost-hunter who is afraid of ghosts isn’t a very good
one! But sometimes ghosts make me nervous, because they play tricks. They hide their heads. They
pass through walls quickly, so I hit my head when I follow them. Then I think about getting another
job. But I don’t know any other job that is as exciting as being a ghost-hunter. So I go on running into
walls and finding lost heads. This is what I can do well and so I do it.
Only sometimes I have bed dreams. I dream that a big ghost catches me and takes me to the north
of Scotland. There hundreds of ghosts are waiting angrily for me. Thank goodness it’s only a dream.
