Northwest Halifax High School Library
Media Centers the Heartbeat to Our Learning Community
Library resources in all cases will enable the individual to make up the Program
of Studies. The library recognizes that many materials are controversial and that at any
given item may offend a student. But, it depends on the student’s interest in the
material. The library does not restrict access to library materials based on the age of the
user. There may be a rare occasion when an exception is made to this policy, but only
with the library director’s approval and due to unusual circumstances.
Library collections are related to the success of students that are engaged in the
process of learning and discovering. Text books were the primary focus of this learning,
but now things have changed. We now offer different ways of learning including visual,
digital, and online learning.
This library is using this collection development plan because the book ratio is
less than ten books per student. This library at Northwest Halifax High School has eighty
nooks that are being used and will probably increase in the future as the years go by.
Sphere
The primary responsibility of the Northwest Halifax High School Library is to
serve the students and teachers of Northwest by providing a broad choice of materials
to meet their informational, educational, cultural and recreational needs. Materials are
selected to aid individuals, groups, and organizations attain practical solutions to daily
problems, and to enrich the quality of life for all school students and staff.
Budget and space limitations, as well as local needs, preclude the library from
duplicating the specialized and comprehensive collections that exist elsewhere. Access
to these collections is provided through cooperative networking, interlibrary loan, and
direct referral. All outlets of the Northwest Halifax Library system are designed to
provide access on an equal basis to the collections of both the students of Northwest
and the teachers.
