STATEMENT OF THE JOB:

The Director is responsible for national and international student recruitment for all of the undergraduate and graduate academic programs. He/she will supervise and mentor a staff of

23 and will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office of Admissions. The Director will have the ability to evaluate and utilize data in decision-making to build and enhance enrollment and retention processes and strategies and will have the ability to manage a clear, serviceoriented communication plan to students and other constituents. Candidates should possess a depth of experience and a record of success in building partnerships both within and outside the institution.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Specific Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Meet enrollment goals for undergraduate and graduate academic programs.

Oversee the admissions budget preparation and management.

Travel on behalf of the University of Southern Maine for recruitment and other institution related events.

 Develop and maintain close working relationships with faculty, students, staff and key constituents.

 Speak publically to individuals, groups on and off campus.

 Assist in the development and maintenance of the admissions office’s recruitment and marketing plan with the purpose of promoting the institutions visibility and general recruitment efforts.

 Evaluate and execute admission decisions on applicant files for all academic programs

(undergraduate and graduate level).

Directly supervise, manage and evaluate admissions staff members.

Develop and monitor statistical reports to enhance recruitment strategies, yield management, forecasting and operational efficiency.

Oversee and coordinate all on-campus prospective student recruitment events; Open

House programs, interviews, tours, in partnership with other offices.

 Assist in the development of policies and procedures that meet regulatory and institutional requirements and that provide fair and equitable treatment of all applicants.

 Serve as a leader in the Enrollment Management unit and partner with community members to reach divisional goals.

Other duties as assigned.

SPECIAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES*:

Authority to commit financial resources of $25,000 or more as provided in the campus

Signature Authority matrix and/or MaineStreet Marketplace.

 Direct responsibility for safety and security of employees, students, minors, and/or visitors or property.

 Direct responsibility for care, safety, and security of minors (under 18), incapacitated persons, or persons with developmental disabilities who participate in Universitysponsored programs.

 Control over, access to, or security of restricted levels of information technology systems that would allow the person to harm the IT systems or the information contained in them.

Ability to drive a University vehicle and provide proof of a valid driver’s license.

Ability to drive colleagues, students or others and provide proof of a valid driver’s license.

Ability to provide own transportation (fully-insured vehicle), provide proof of a valid driver’s license, and compliance with Maine law regarding vehicle insurance.

Work on federally funded projects.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

PUBLIC AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES RELATED TO JOB PERFORMANCE:

Serve on task forces and committees at USM as appropriate. Maintain membership and involvement in state, regional and/or national organizations related to admission.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:

Internal: Works closely with all academic and administrative departments at USM

External Contacts: Maintains close working relationships with school systems (secondary and higher education) throughout the state and New England region. Close involvement with other professionals in local, regional, national and international organizations related to admission.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to effectively communicate in person and in writing and be able to speak publicly.

Should possess high energy, attention to detail, and the ability to organize effectively.

Must have the ability to synthesis admissions data and trends, forecast changes in enrollment/higher education and develop appropriate strategies to respond.

Should have strong technology skills and the ability to manage a student database.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

 A bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 to 7 years admissions/higher education administration with a progressive experience.

 Previous supervisory experience managing professional and student staff.

 Experience with event planning and marketing.

A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel and work nights and weekends as necessary.

License:

Valid motor vehicle driver’s license

Preferred:

A master’s degree is preferred.
