Reflection from Fr. Hilary: Combatting Human Trafficking (1)
In the early summer of 2014 I wrote here on this topic. I mentioned that the Pope had a special meeting in the Vatican
with Police Commissioners and Church leaders and lay people – all determined to fight this modern type of slavery which
is a great scourge in many countries. The Home Secretary and the Metropolitan Police Commissioner were amongst
those present.
I’m writing now to give you an update. In December 2014 a further meeting was held, this time in London. It was
chaired by Cardinal Nichols. He said “the situation was so complicated that many of the enslaved victims do not relaise
their predicament and the criminals responsible, unlike the 18 th century slave traders, are hidden within a murky industry
that defies frontiers and borders, reaching into ordinary streets and suburbs across almost every country on the planet.”
Human trafficking is now the second most profitable criminal enterprise in the world, overtaken only by the illegal arms
trade. Many billions are involved.
Enforced prostitution is the main culprit. Young women leave their own country under the pretext of happy work abroad
and then are ensnared far from home, family and friends – can one imagine their suffering? Others are trafficked to
work as forced labour or in domestic slavery. Some are forced into criminality.
Up to recently, agencies and police forces have made efforts to tackle the problem but on their own. Now, however, the
Cardinal has seen the opportunity to co-ordinate efforts, share information and work closely together. In the face of
such a huge international crime, this is surely essential for things to be effective. Why am I writing all this? So that we
all become more aware of something which should concern everybody and to help inform others. One piece more on the
subject next week.
Please keep and reflect.
