PARCC-like Assessments in Mathematics 10/10/14 In-Service

Directions: Teachers will break up in groups by course to revise upcoming assessments/benchmarks/assignments to mirror PARCC-style questions.

 Today, we will be using our “Literacy in Math Assessments” workshop time to enhance our assessments to include aspects that they will see on PARCC.

 You will also be meeting with our Reading Specialist, Kelly Latka, to discuss how to prepare students to write quality justifications and OEQ responses. In PARCC, students will be graded on the clarity of their justification on

Extended Response questions.

 It is vital that students demonstrate a proficiency in Reading and Writing prior to taking PARCC Assessments.

 The best way to accomplish this goal is to have them practice “PARCC-like” problems throughout the year.

 On the next page, you will find a “Top 10” PARCC-type question list, with provided examples & where to find them on the PARCC Sample EOY Test. This is not a complete list of PARCC skills. For a better idea, refer to the

Sample EOY Tests provided (PBA coming out shortly).

 Improving student performance in these areas will be an on-going challenge, one that we should continue to work on in PLCs throughout the year.

 At the conclusion of today’s meeting, please e-mail Greg Ryan these revised assessments.

Goal: While we do not, and can not, need to change every problem to match one of the questions types listed below, we want to work toward improving our assessments by ensuring that students have experience with these rigorous problem types, as well as having the opportunity to explain, justify & demonstrate true understanding of material.

We are doing a great job of this already, so let’s keep striving to meet PARCC’s goal of having students ready for College and Career!
