Teacher Instructions
Before the activity – copy and cut out the “domino cards”
This activity may be differentiated
For support students - by limiting the number of cards groups are given or by
changing the complexity of the quadratic functions.
For extension students – Leave more parts blank and/or have students write
situations that would go with each quadratic function.
Instructions to give to students:
• Take turns matching pairs of dominos that you think belong together.
• Each time you do you have a match, explain your thinking clearly and carefully to your
partner.
• It is important that you both understand the matches. If you don't agree or understand, ask
your partner to explain their reasoning again. You are both responsible for each other’s
learning.
• On some cards one or more forms of the equation are missing. Write the missing forms of
the equation (fill in the blanks) before you match the graph to the function.
When you and your partner have matched and agreed on all of your dominos:
• One student from each group is to visit another group and compare your answers.
• If you are staying at your desk, be ready to explain the reasons for your group's matches.
• If you are visiting another group:
• Write your card matches on a piece of paper or take a picture with your phone
(with teacher permission).
• Go to another group's desk and check to see which matches are different from your
own.
• If there are differences, ask for an explanation. If you still don't agree, explain your
own thinking.
• When you return to your own desk, you need to consider as a pair whether to make
any changes to your own work.
