EDSE 491: Student Teaching in Secondary Education (9 CHR)
Course Description
Ten weeks of observation and participation in classroom activity; supervised teaching in an
independent school. Candidates will be assigned a mentor teacher at the school and university
supervisors. Instruction of candidates will be based upon NCATE, INTASC principles, and the
Qatar National Professional Standards for Teachers. Instructional activities will be designed
using the Qatar Core Curriculum Standards.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of Application Process and Interview for PostBaccalaureate Secondary Education Program, successful completion of coursework up to
student teaching period.
Course Objectives
This course is designed to enable candidates to:
1.
Apply content knowledge in an authentic context.
2.
Use a broad range of pedagogical knowledge and skills in authentic contexts.
3.
Use instructional technology to support teaching and learning.
4.
Demonstrate awareness of every student’s uniqueness.
5.
Use scholarly inquiry to solve problems in teaching and learning.
6.
Understand the ethical issues in teaching and learning.
7.
Appreciate the effectiveness of teaming in educational contexts.
Course Learning Outcomes
The candidate will:
1.
Conduct instructional and other professional activities consistent with the requirements
of law, rules and regulations, and independent school policies and procedures.
2.
Assess students, interpret assessment results, and use assessment data to plan and
implement instruction.
3.
Select, adapt, and use instructional strategies and materials, including technology and
adaptive devices, that are appropriate to the students and that promote independence and
generalization of skills.
4.
Develop appropriate lesson plans and on-going assessment strategies for students of
diverse abilities and teach in a variety of settings.
5.
Develop rapport with students and create a safe, positive, and supportive learning
environment in which diversities are valued.
6.
Evaluate the results of instruction in terms of learner characteristics and teaching and
modify if needed.
7.
Direct the activities of a classroom assistant, volunteer, or peer tutor.
8.
Create an environment that encourages self-advocacy and increased independence.
9.
Demonstrate a variety of effective behavior management techniques appropriate to the
needs of students.
10.
Communicate and collaborate with school and community personnel and families in
designing and delivering appropriate instruction.
11.
Work collaboratively with other educators and related service personnel to maximize
achievement toward educational goals.
12.
Encourage and assist families to become active participants in the educational team by
promoting positive relationships.
13.
Demonstrate commitment to developing the highest educational and quality-of-life
potential for all students.
14.
Demonstrate positive regard for the culture, religion, and gender.
15.
Promote and maintain a high level of competence and integrity in the practice of the
profession.
