Upper Extreme = 102
Q3 = 96
Median/Q2 = 91
Q1 = 82
Lower Extreme = 70
My Numbers:
70, 72, 75, 80, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 90, 91, 91, 91, 92, 93, 93, 95, 95, 96, 98, 98, 99, 99, 101, 102
Lower Extreme: 70. This was found by lining the numbers up in numerical order and finding the lowest
number in the sequence. This is shown by the lowest line on the box and whisker chart. (Shown by
purple arrow).
Upper Extreme: 102. This was found by lining the numbers up in numerical order and finding the highest
number in the sequence. This is shown by the highest line on the box and whisker chart. (Shown by
green arrow).
Median/Second Quartile (Q2): 91. I started by dividing my sample size, 27, by two so I could know
where to stop counting on my number line. Since 28/2=14, I knew that I would need to count 13 number
starting from 70 to find the numbers in my median. Since there was only one number in the middle, I
knew that my median had to be 91. This is shown as the line in the middle of the rectangle. (Shown by
black arrow).
70, 72, 75, 80, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 90, 91, 91, 91, 92, 93, 93, 95, 95, 96, 98, 98, 99, 99, 101, 102
First Quartile (Q1): 82. I found my first quartile by starting at my median, 91. I had to count to find out
that there is 13 numbers below the second 91. To find the first quartile, I needed to find the median of
those 13 numbers. Since it was an odd number, there would only be one number in the median. I
counted six numbers starting from 70 to find my median which would be the first quartile that is marked
by the bottom edge of the rectangle. (Shown by red arrow).
70, 72, 75, 80, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 90, 91, 91, 91, 92, 93, 93, 95, 95, 96, 98, 98, 99, 99, 101, 102
Third Quartile (Q3): 96. I found this quartile by starting from the 102 and counting backwards 13
numbers, which would be the last 91 on the number line. I found the median of these 13 numbers, so
once again, since it was an odd number there would only be one number in the middle. I counted 6
numbers again to find my median which would be the third quartile that is marked by the top edge of
the rectangle. (Shown by blue arrow).
