Terms of Reference
Accountable for (decisions/actions by the Committee):

Advising and making recommendations on the impact upon the University of
the Revised Sex Discrimination Act 2006 and the Sexual Orientation
Regulations 2003.

Advising on the implementation of the University Gender Scheme and Action
Plan.

Advising the Equality and Diversity Committee on issues relating to Gender
(including transgender) and Sexual Orientation within the University.

Oversee the equality networks that may be set up in regards to Women’s,
Men’s, Transgender or Sexual Orientation issues.
Responsible for (actions on behalf of the Committee):

Making recommendations to the Equality and Diversity Committee and other
appropriate committees on all gender, transgender and sexual orientation
matters in relation to the Gender General and Specific Duties, taking into
account the legal framework and national guidance.

Developing suitable links concerning gender, transgender and sexual
orientation issues with University Committees, members of the University and
appropriate external bodies.

Contributing to the preparation and review of the University’s Equality Action
Plan in respect of gender and sexual orientation issues.

To contribute to the annual Equality and Diversity monitoring report to Council
on issues relating to gender, transgender and sexual orientation.
Consulted on:

The development, implementation and review of equality impact assessments
relevant to gender, transgender and sexuality issues.

The development and review of the University’s Equality Scheme.

Other relevant equality and diversity issues.
Informed on:

The Gender General and Specific Duties.

Relevant legislation pertaining to gender, transgender and sexual orientation
issues.

Gender, transgender and sexual orientation matters discussed by the
University’s Learning, Teaching and Assessment Committee and Widening
Participation Committee.

Research and consultations carried out with staff and students relating to
gender, transgender and sexual orientation.
Mode of Operation


The Gender, Transgender and Sexuality Committee will support equality of
opportunity and good relations between staff and students whatever their
race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion and belief, age or socioeconomic background. This support will include participating in university
activities, such as equalities monitoring, impact assessment and other
measures as appropriate, in line with the University’s legal obligations.
The Gender, Transgender and Sexuality Committee will meet as required at
least three times a year to monitor the implementation of the Gender Scheme
and Action Plan and report to the Equality and Diversity Committee.
