BEGINNER K’ICHEE’
LAS 328 (39644)
This course is a practical introduction to K’ichee’, a Mayan language spoken in the
western highlands of Guatemala by more than one million people. The K’ichee’ have
played a crucial role in the history of the highland Maya, boasting also a rich literary
tradition with works such as the Popol Vuh, the Título de Totonicapán, the Theologia
Indorum and, more recently, the poetry of Humberto Ak’ab’al. The course aims to
develop student fluency and foster an understanding of K’ichee’ culture through
language. In addition to an overview of the grammar, students will be provided with
the vocabulary and drills to develop their conversational ability. Students are
required to participate in weekly online live drills with native speakers in
Guatemala.
