Understand the System of RtI
RtI is a comprehensive assessment and intervention process that identifies students who are at-risk and
monitors the academic progress of all students in the general education curriculum. RTI calls for a
number of professionals to work together to successfully complete a series of ongoing tasks (i.e.,
universal screening, intervention, progress monitoring). IAT is a mechanism within RtI to evaluate a
student’s response to tiered levels of support. The IAT is a collaborative support for teachers in meeting
the needs of all learners. RtI is also the framework of interventions that should be documented as a
part of a special education evaluation referral.

 RtI emphasizes there is no longer a significant difference between general education and
special education. Student diversity is something that cannot be changed, however, how we
deliver the curriculum is something we can change!
Identify the relation between RtI and the Intervention Assistance Team
(IAT)
Intervention Assistance Teams (IAT) works within RtI to successfully coordinate a series of ongoing tasks
(i.e., universal screening, intervention and progress monitoring for individual students). The IAT also
fulfills the district’s Child Find responsibilities and facilitates all referrals for Special Education Evaluation
(including referrals that should not be delayed by the RtI process).
 All Campus Referral Committees CRC are eliminated effective with the 2012-2013
School Year.

Next Steps
1. Identify an IAT Chairperson to coordinate the IAT process.
2. Determine if you will establish multiple IATs to decrease the time on task for one team.
3. Ensure campus administrators and IAT chairperson at minimum, have access to the RtI panel in
Chancery SMS (SISHelp. Enter course number SP0911).
4. Work to allow teachers to enter their own intervention data.
5. Acknowledge a referral for special education evaluation must be documented in Chancery SMS
beginning with the 2012-2013 school year.
6. Sign-up for additional “face to face” trainings via e-train, beginning September 25th. Session
