Introduction and Background A number of projects have been established to manage the transfer of responsibility for the operation of JANET services in London from SWERN Ltd to JANET(UK). This document describes the Project to manage the transfer of network operation from SWERN to JANET(UK). 2. Project Aims a) To migrate each institution from the SWERN operated network to the JANET(UK) operated network, in an efficient manner with the minimum of disruption to JANET customers. b) To ensure that customers are fully briefed on the transition process c) To maintain clear fault management and reporting systems during the transition process 3. Project Objectives a) To manage the deployment of new telecoms infrastructure procured by JANET(UK) b) To ensure SWERN PoPs are able to accommodate new equipment in parallel with the existing equipment, as required. c) To manage the process of purchase, delivery and installation of any new network equipment, as required. d) To agree a migration strategy and timetable e) To test new equipment and new telecoms links f) To produce a transition timetable in consultation with customers and the telecoms supplier. g) To ensure customers are fully informed of fault reporting mechanisms, migration strategy and timetable h) To manage the migration of customer connections to the new network 4. i) To ensure all JANET(UK) documentation is issued to institutions j) To decommission old SWERN equipment if necessary and arrange for its disposal. Approach to the Project JANET(UK) and SWERN Ltd will co-operate and work together to carry out the Project Plan and to make various modifications as agreed and necessary. Programme Roles and Responsibilities Project sponsors The Project sponsors are: Roland Trice (Manager, Network Planning & Projects Group, JANET(UK)) and Tim Phillips (SWERN Ltd).
