MEETING MINUTES

COPH Alumni Association: Valeriya Kettlehut (President), Michele Kassmeier
AGENDA
1. SA/Alumni Association (AA) Partnership
a. Valeriya shared that COPH Alumni Association in planning an event and potential
networking opportunity for COPH students.
b. Next alumni association meeting will be held in October and is open to its members and
COPH students. Details about the event will be shared in this meeting.
c. Meeting members suggested potential collaboration between COPH Alumni Association
with other alumni chapters on campus.
2. Dean’s Forum
a. This year Dean’s forum is scheduled on October 3rd in MCPH 2001 starting 11:30am.
b. Caryn Vincent met with Dean Dr. Jane Meza to discuss about the theme and panelists
for the forum.
c. Theme for this year is -“Research and Collaboration”.
d. Molly suggested COPH-SA for an email to COPH students about questions for the
panelists in Dean’s forum, and proposed an additional panelist to the existing list of
panelists for the forum. Caryn will be sending out the email to COPH students.
3. COPH Research Day
a. The student research conference is scheduled November 15 and will take place at
Maurer Center for Public Health, 2nd floor.
b. Jiajun and Ketki will be responsible for coordinating the event. Ketki will be contacting
the College of Nursing poster easels.
c. Caryn will send out the ‘CALL FOR ABSTRACTS’ today.

4. Yearly Budget
a. Caryn shared COPH-SA budget for the academic year 2013-14 with board members.
b. Ketki discussed opportunity to apply for a grant to organize advocacy event during the
National Public Health Week in spring 2014. The grant application details are attached
as an appendix to this document. The board members will discuss and explore the
feasibility and potential events for advocacy to apply for the grant this year.
5. Bylaws
a. Caryn suggested that the existing bylaws for student association need revision. SA board
members have agreed to review the bylaws and recommended potential revisions in
forthcoming meeting.
6. Student Senate report
a. Austin Person (COPH Student Senate representative) has sent an update on current
student senate activities. The student senate updates are given below.
The UNMC Office of Public Relations visited UNMC Student Senate in senate meeting held
Wednesday, Sept.4, 2013. They informed of some upcoming events on campus. The biggest one
will be a weeklong UNMC Spirit Week during the last full week of October. Each day throughout
the week there will be events with free food – an obvious draw for me as a poor grad student.
Monday – Free coffee, fruit, and yogurt will be offered to students in the Sorrell Center.
Tuesday – A campus wide scavenger hunt will take place with the winning teams eligible
for bookstore gift cards, Husker football tickets. Food trucks with healthy options will
be on campus that day in the student pavilion area by the ice rink.
Wednesday – Wellness day – Free 5 minute massages will be provided to students as
well as opportunities to participate in yoga sessions.
Friday – Halloween – Costume Contest
The Office of Public Relations also requested the help of volunteers to participate in the
Nebraska Science Festival. This will take place April 24-27, 2014. Information about the events
can be found at NEscifest.com
A campus wide blood drive will be taking place September 24-25. The drive will be in the
student rec center. Emails promoting the event will be sent out in the next couple weeks.

On the evening of September 20, there will be a campus wide “Welcome Back BBQ”. The event
will take place on the green space just west of the COPH building, with food being served
between the hours of 6-7pm and a movie to follow. Food will be provided to the first 1100
individuals – including guests of students, provided the students have valid UNMC IDs. So bring
your families!
A raffle will be taking place over the next couple weeks with tickets being sold in Sorrell. Prizes
up for grabs include pairs of tickets to the NU vs. Northwestern and NU vs. Michigan State
football games. Also being raffled off are special parking spots around campus. Within each
student lot there are two spots reserved for winners of this raffle. Winners will still have to
purchase parking passes, but will be guaranteed prime parking spots every day.
7. Miscellaneous:
a. The COPH-SA board members Caryn and Ketki presented the SA activities and its
functions to Fullbright Libyan Scholars last month. Past COPH-SA board members Anh
Nguyen and Janelle Jacobson are participated in this event to share their experience
with COPH-SA.
b. The COPH-SA welcomed the new incoming students at College of Public Health - Fall
Orientation Day and orientated them to COPH-SA activities and other student
organizations on campus. COPH-SA organized a student panel by inviting student
panelists various departments of COPH at the fall student orientation.
8. Next COPH-SA meeting is scheduled September 26, 2013, 11:00 am –noon. This meeting will be
focused on planning and preparation for the Dean’s forum and Student research day.

APPENDIX
A.C.T.I.O.N Plan
The American Public Health Association Student Assembly is continuing its new scholarship/grant program
entitled A.C.T.I.O.N (Advocacy on Campuses That Impacts Our Nation). This is an opportunity for all
public health students on campus to design grassroots advocacy projects. The top submission nationally will
be granted $500 and implemented during the spring of 2014, preferably during National Public Health Week
(April 7-13, 2014). This grant program aims to motivate public health students to create and implement plans
for raising public health advocacy on their campuses and in their communities.
The application deadline is Friday, September 27th, 2013.
GUIDELINES FOR A.C.T.I.O.N Plan
All proposals should be related to public health advocacy. The students must define their advocacy projects
on their own terms. The project should encourage creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. The overall
program is to be community-wide in scope and impact.
ELIGIBILE STUDENTS
Only student members of the American Public Health Association are eligible to apply for this grant towards
a public health advocacy project. Groups of students from the same campus, as well as individual students,
may submit proposals. Public Health Student Associations on college campuses are also eligible to submit
proposals as a campus organization where at least one student is a member of the American Public Health
Association.

To be considered, a student (or group of students) must prepare a written statement, which describes the
project (who, what, where, how) including expected outcomes and prospects for future impact (not to exceed
two pages) as well as a budget (one page). Proposals should include pre-approval of all involved parties and
organizations involved in the project. The proposal should be submitted electronically to the APHA Student
Assembly National Public Health Week Subcommittee. Students with queries may direct them to the NPHW
Subcommittee Co-Chairs at nphw@aphastudents.org.
AWARDING OF GRANT
Final decisions on all grants are made by the APHA Student Assembly Chair, Chair-Elect, Action Committee
Co-Chairs, and National Public Health Week Sub-Committee Chair. Grant is made upon assurance that the
project proposed will in fact, be undertaken during the spring of 2014.
TIMETABLES FOR PROPOSALS AND DECISIONS




All final proposals must be submitted to the APHA Student Assembly Action Committee by Friday,
September 27th, 2013. The top proposal will be determined Friday, October 11h, 2013.
Winning proposals will be announced during the APHA Annual Meeting 2012, November 2-6,
2013.
Projects should be completed during spring of 2014.
Final reports are due to the APHA Student Assembly Action Committee by June 6rd, 2014.
REQUIREMENT FOR EACH PROJECT'S FINAL REPORT
The responsible student(s) must prepare and submit a final report by Friday, June 6rd, 2014, submitted
electronically to the APHA Student Assembly Action Committee Co-Chairs. The final report is to be limited
to two pages of narrative with an accounting of the funds expended and one page of digital photographs of
the project. The narrative should include: a brief restatement of the project's purpose/plans, actual work
completed, outcomes/achievements/ failures, and long-term prospects of the initiative. Reports will be
posted on the APHA Student Assembly website for all to see and learn from, as well as distributed to the
APHA Student Assembly General Body as a July 2014 Action Alert or in the News and Views Newsletter
Summer Edition.
