UA Committee Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, September 23, 2013 - 6:10 pm
Matt: No available rooms in MU at this time. Potential meeting space in Curtiss.
Contacted Tommy Shaw regarding risk management/event authorization to set up
meeting time. He is available 8-11:45, 1:15-4. Purpose of meeting: own educational
purposes. Setting up meeting for 1:15 pm on Friday.
Update on sidewalk by MWL.
Michael: We should target senators for colleges for this issue.
Abbie: Had to fill out waiver every time we went to Des Moines.
Matt: Wants to make it easier for students to do event authorization. Look at keeping
archives for events- usually no changes needed from year to year. Other problem: return
times. People never hear back from risk management.
Scott: Good idea to focus on students planning events. They have enough frustration
elsewhere. If GSB focuses on their issues, they will see us positively. Suggestion: student
activities center sends out Newsline. If something is relevant to student org leaders, they
will put it out on Newsline. We could put together a survey to send out, get numbers on
main issues. Face to face, going to hall councils is good, but having stats is great. I can
help with the process. Will get a broad spectrum of student leadership.
Matt: What do we use for surveys? Qualtrex. Can go to survey.ag.iastate.edu to make
surveys.
Scott: Will take time to do. We need checklists of what frustrates students so we can
quantify the problem. Need hard data. Start writing down questions, areas with which
students are upset. Aim for launching survey in a month. Need to also encourage people
to take it. Have senators follow up in their constituencies to increase survey response rate.
Matt: Ask any student groups if they’ve had issues with risk/event management.
Nick: Met with Suzie Johnson at Risk Management. She and another guy met with
people from the state. City of Ames inspector who was responsible for ISU retired. He
was relaxed with the rules. Now, we have new people, who said we can’t sell pizza on
campus. Doesn’t follow food code. Are interpretation questions. Is an exemption for
nonprofits, but what qualifies something as a nonprofit? Technically ISU is a nonprofit,
but nonprofits can only do one food sale/week. Dept of Agriculture rule: can’t resell meat
products. Is ISU a govt/state entity? I’m going to go to meeting w/ state and Suzie
Johnson to talk about issue. Inspectors at VEISHA imposed new standards, were not as
accommodating.
Matt: Have you gotten anywhere with 6A bus route?
Michael: Austin and I are going to meet on Monday at 9 PM to talk about the issue, will
send survey to residents in towers, Greek housing on Welch, anyone we know in the
apartments on the bus route. Don’t know if GPSS has met yet. Project on hold until they
meet.
Guenther: Route to Freddy Court- mix of school buses and CyRide buses. They are full
by other stops and cannot pick up more students. If you’re on a later stop, you are not
picked up as often. Second, consider meeting with FP & M on how more students are
impacting sidewalks and paths. Two years ago, did a Campustown safety walk.
I photocopied everything in the binder from Hillary and Joey.
Abbie: The lawn that separates the 2 bus stops at Freddy is not that big.
Guenther: Problem is that buses fill up and never get to the other side. Bus routing is, in
general, an issue.
Matt: Talk to Zack Murrell (sp?) about it.
Guenther: Problems: Not a cord to stop, only one door, a lot slower than a regular CyRide
bus. We don’t pay the CyRide fee to get rented school buses.
Abbie: I was at the Academic Affairs Council. Talked about overcrowding and how ISU
is growing quickly. I said CyRide and dining are issues; they hadn’t considered dining.
Matt: They need more options at the MU. They could set up tents and have vendors there.
Abbie: Will only get worse in the winter, when people will not go home in the winter.
Matt: We’ll meet w/ Event Management on Friday at 1:15. Breitbarth meeting with FP &
M on Thursday. Michael meeting for bus route on Monday at 9 PM. After your meetings,
make reports. Send them to me, and I will send them to the rest of the group.
Cabinet is trying to restructure, so there may be a Student Affairs department. This may
be combined with UA, might be working in tandem with others.
Michael: I wrote a bill for UA senate seating. We have one open seat and maybe two.
Talk to Bauer, get UA at-larges put on the “get involved with GSB” section of the
website.
Meeting adjourned at 6:47 pm.
