Position Context
The Women’s Centre for Health and Wellbeing Albury Wodonga Inc is a not for profit organisation
providing services and support to women by women through feminist action. Services provided include,
generalist and domestic violence counselling, group programs, information, advocacy and referral, NILS
program, Southern Womens Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Program, a well women’s clinic and NSW
Rape Crisis provide counselling for adult survivors of childhood sexual assault.
Position Summary
The Counsellor will be responsible for providing a counselling service to women of varied backgrounds
and circumstances. Counselling services required to be provided include, individual counselling, group
programs and assessment and referral. The Women’s Centre provides short term counselling from a
feminist framework. The counselling role covers general counselling and domestic violence specific
counselling.
This position requires the establishment and development of strong working relationships with:



Women’s Centre for Health and Wellbeing staff, and visiting practitioners
Women from the general public
Organisations, services and networks within the Albury/Wodonga region.
Specific Accountabilities
Counselling
1. Promote and enhance the social and emotional health and wellbeing of women through a
woman-centred counselling service.
2. Conduct assessment, determine eligibility and provide culturally appropriate counselling,
support, advocacy and referral.
3. Respond to women presenting at the Women’s Centre in person, by phone and online and
provide appropriate support, assessment and referral for these women.
4. Facilitate groups for women in conjunction with other staff and agencies.
5. Manage a caseload
6. Develop and maintain networks with appropriate organisations, locally, regionally and further
afield as required.
7. Participate in regular clinical external supervision.
8. Maintain thorough case records and client files.
Client Intake and Support
1. Provide support to clients presenting at the Centre, through information, referral or intake
processes.
2. Respond to enquiries from clients and referring workers
3. Maintain client records where required to meet legal and best practice requirements.
Communication
4. Promote the profile and image of the Women’s Centre for Health and Wellbeing through day to
day activities of the position.
5. Contribute to the ongoing development of teamwork within the Centre.
6. Participate in internal supervision with the centre manager.
7. Work in partnership with the centre administration worker to cover reception and respond to
clients.
Strategic Contributions
8. Contribute to strategic planning
9. Participate in strategic activities, as required.
Continuous Quality Improvement
10.Attend professional development education.
11. Develop Performance Management Plan in liaison with the Manager.
12. Participate in performance management and review as directed by the Manager.
13.Contribute to development and review of policy and procedures relevant to the position.
14.Assist in the development of procedures in relation to the position.
15.Assist with Quality Improvement as required.

Selection Criteria:
Essential

A tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services of similar

Understanding of the nature and complexities of family violence

Commitment to a social model of health and feminist issues

Ability to work with women from a diverse range of backgrounds

Strong Communication and interpersonal skills

Strong organisational skills

Understanding of and commitment to quality improvement initiatives

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Desirable

Knowledge of health and welfare systems in the Albury/Wodonga region

Counselling experience

Experience working with women experiencing family violence

Experience in the delivery of group work programs and activities

Demonstrated skills in client intake and assessment, advocacy and referral
