Colorado Chautauqua’s Greening Laboratory recognized by City of Boulder
BOULDER, Colo. (May 10, 2010) — The Colorado Chautauqua Association's (CCA) Greening Laboratory
has been recognized by and will receive an award from the city of Boulder’s Landmarks Board for their
efforts in the integration of historic preservation and energy efficiency. Established by CCA to research,
test and apply green building techniques and tactics on historic buildings, the Greening Laboratory’s
mission is to preserve history while increasing resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
“We were impressed with the level of work that has been done and the steps Chautauqua is taking to
retrofit historic buildings and see these efforts as an important piece of the city’s climate action plan,”
said James Hewat, historic preservation planner for the city of Boulder. “Historic preservation and
environmental sustainability have previously been viewed autonomously, but Chautauqua’s Greening
Laboratory indicates that the two can successfully work together.”
May is National Preservation Month making this accolade timely and relevant to CCA's ongoing
preservation endeavors. To celebrate, the Greening Laboratory will be recognized on Monday, May 10,
6:00 p.m. at the Heritage Preservation Awards celebration at the Chautauqua Community House. Prior
to the awards, CCA is hosting a preservation and historic tour of the grounds starting at 4 p.m. The tour
will highlight the latest green preservation accomplishments. The tour will meet at the Chautauqua
Community House. Both events are free and open to the public.
"We are honored to receive this recognition by the Boulder Landmarks Board and look forward to
continuing our research and implementation of green preservation practices and sharing our key
insights with building professionals and the private homeowner," remarked Susan Connelly, executive
director of CCA.
For homeowners looking for tips to increase the comfort and efficiency of their homes, CCA is hosting a
free presentation on Tuesday, May 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Chautauqua Community House. Here the CCA
preservation staff will share insights from their ongoing efforts to increase the comfort and energy
efficiency of older homes while preserving historic integrity.
