Possible contributions and Ecopath modelling in the Bay of Bengal

Note: please indicate for what period you would like to build the model and whether you have time series

(effort, biomass, surveys)

Malaysia Meii Mohamed Norizan and Mohammad Enamuel Hoq: want to do a model of the EEZ in the Malacca strait and perhaps will overlap with Indonesian waters with Indonesian colleagues.

Have bottom trawl surveys.

Bangladesh: Rashed Un Nabi. A student has already constructed and published a model of the EEZ

(Ullah 2012). Plan on improving the model by adding bottom and mid-trawlers fleets. Surveys available? time series?

Thailand: Praulai Noothoan and Montri Sumontha. Have long-term data from research vessel plus long-term data for commercial (industrial?) and small scale fleets. Data mostly for coastal areas

(<100m?). Have 2 types of research vessels, inshore and offshore. There is data for offshore Bay of

Bengal (see map). Interested in making a model.

Indonesia: Khairul Amri and Reny Puspori Ramli. Have survey data for 2005-2006 that includes Small pelagics, demersal, crustacean, from acoustic and bottom trawl survey. Interested in making a model of the Sumatra (and the Malacca Strait?)

Sri Lanka: Buddhika Dulan Abeyratna and Priyadarshani. Want to make a model of the east coast of

Sri Lanka. Have a model published? Have trawl survey for one year (recent), and data for zooplankton and phytoplankton inside the EEZ and outside (one year). Have data on sea cucumber, lobster, and …. biomass (?)

Tuna commission: Rishi Sharma, not much contribution intended except perhaps a swordfish component for the whole Bay of Bengal model

India: K K Joshi and Sumil Mohamed. Have developed a model of the Indian Gulf of Mannar (20,000 km2, 33 groups). Also model of have Spark Bay and in the Arabian Sea: NW coast, Kanarka, and the north of the Maldives for tuna and the pelagic system. Data is being collected for the coast of India in the Bay of Bengal but will not consider only one model for this area but 3 areas: Andra, Odisha,

West Bengal (?)

India, West Bengal: Sachinandan Dutta is making the model

Myanmar: Daw Thida Moe and W Aung Win Sei. Have demersal national (plus the Nansen) trawl survey of all 3 regions of the coast. It would be possible to make an Ecopath model of the northern section.

Amy Then: do not have an Ecopath model. Contribution would be to cross check the estimates of natural mortality.

Andaman: Arun Kumar. Doing a model of the east coast of Adaman. Would like to make a model of the whole coast. Have survey data, data on mammals, benthos ….

Maldives: Ahmed Shifez and Khadheija Ali. Catch records for 3-4 year, skipjack and yellowfin tuna fisheries plus fishing in some reefs. Could make a model of the EEZ in recent years.

1. Maldives, to be built

2. Indian Gulf of Mannar, built, not published

3. NW coast, built

4. Kanarka built, published?

5. Indian model, tuna and pelagic environment, being built

6. Spark Bay, built, published?

7. West Bengal, India being built

8. Odisha region, interest in building model

9. Andra region, published but interest in making a new model

10. Bangladesh, model published, to be updated

11. interest in building First model to be built in Myanmar (planned)

12. other models could be built for this regions (perhaps 2 models)

13. model being built for the eastern coast of Andaman; Could make model of the whole Andaman coast

14. Thailand, interest in building a model

15. Malaysia, interest in building model

16. Indonesia, interest in building a model

17. area of high seas data (Thailand)

about diet allocation

Indian mackerel can assume that catch is proportional to biomass

Tuna juveniles aggregate around the Maldives and in the eastern Bay of Bengal (Indonesia)

 hilsa: 10% of feeding in region 3.
