Course overview
Bell's Young Cambridge Scholars is a challenging subject-based programme designed to improve
students’ ability to study a range of university subjects in English. The academic programme
combines:
Subject study
Students will study eight hours of Maths; Science; English Literature; Art and Design in English. The
subjects have been specially selected to give students a flavour of studying some of the classic
subjects at the University of Cambridge.
Lecture programme
Students will develop their knowledge and new perspectives in a range of topics relating to subjects
offered at the University of Cambridge, all delivered by Cambridge scholars.
Academic skills
Students will develop a range of skills in English to develop their critical thinking and independent
study skills. Students will also develop their exam skills and get an introduction to the IELTS test.

Course description
The course includes subject study, an inspiring lecture programme and an academic skills module,
with a variety of study tours and activities.
Subject study
8 hours per subject (Total: 32 hours per course)
The subjects have been specially selected to give students a flavour of studying some of the most
popular topics at the University of Cambridge. Students will study eight hours of each of the following
subjects in English.
Maths
An introduction to studying Mathematics at university level. Learn the language of Maths, such as how
to describe concepts and calculations, and present statistics.
English literature
Look at a range of classical and contemporary texts, including a variety of genres such as short
stories, poetry and plays.
Science
Develop the ability to study a range of university science subjects in English such as biology, physics
and environmental science.
Art and Design
Study the history of art, architecture and design and learn how to create, describe and evaluate
artistic work.
Lecture programme
12 hours per course
Delivered by University of Cambridge lecturers, students will develop their knowledge and
perspectives in a range of topics relating to classic Cambridge subjects including philosophy, law,
history and English literature. One of the lectures will focus on the qualities you need to become a
University of Cambridge student.
Academic skills
10 hours per course
Students will develop a range of skills in English to develop their critical thinking and independent
study skills such as:



Writing an essay
Formulating and expressing opinions
Note-taking and summarizing.
In addition, students will get an introduction to the IELTS test, a test that measures a students’
English language that is required by British universities, and learn essential exam techniques such as
planning, revising and practising past papers.
Every student receives a weekly tutorial to review progress.
Excursions
3 x 1 full-day excursions per course
Students will enjoy three excursions to:



Cambridge - a walking tour of the city with a visit to King's College and the Fitzwilliam Museum
London - a river cruise along the River Thames and a chance to visit a top London Museum
Norwich - a tour around the Sainsbury Centre, a museum and gallery on the University of East Anglia
campus, and a visit to Norwich's cathedral and castle.
Activities
24 hours per course
Students will participate in a variety of whole-school activities each day to make new friends and
practise new language skills. Activities include sports, creative arts, games and competitions.
Entry Requirements
Before enrolling on Bell's Young Cambridge Scholars course, students are required to complete an
English Online Assessment (Oxford English Testing system) to clarify their English level. Once a
student has passed the assessment they will be interviewed by the Bell team either via Skype or
telephone.
