Collaborative/Independent Project

Choose one or more of the projects below to make your own connections to prehistoric cave art. Each project can be completed by an individual student or by a small group. I’ve included a few links at the bottom of the page to get you started.

Produce a multimedia presentation of depictions of humans and animals in cave art. Use the presentation to offer your own theory for the absence of predatory animals in most of the cave paintings.

 You may include images from the articles "Paintings of Animals," "Human and Symbol

Paintings," and "Sculptures and Etchings."

 Use "Links" to find additional cave art images on the Internet.

 Make sure to cite your sources for all images.

Review the information in the articles "Paintings of Animals," "Human and Symbol Paintings," and

"Sculptures and Etchings" to learn about the most significant cave art discoveries in Europe. Then download an outline map of western Europe from the Internet. Outline maps are widely available on the

Internet (keyword: outline map). Indicate on the map the locations and dates of important prehistoric cave art discoveries as well as related information of your choosing.

 Use "Links" to find additional information on the Internet.

 Use words or simple icons to indicate sites where animal, human, or symbolic images have been discovered.

 You may want to use multimedia software to convert your outline map into an interactive map.

Then add links to useful Web sites and images.

Read the article "Life in the Ice Age" and consider how far hominids had evolved when the Magdalenian culture appeared. Then write a short essay in your own words explaining why you think art began to appear during the Magdalenian period.

 Mention the factors listed in the article and identify the ones you consider most important for the ability to create art.

 Include a brief definition of art in your essay.

 In your conclusion, tell why you think the creation of new cave art ended.

Use what you have read and seen in the articles "Human and Symbol Paintings" and "Paintings of

Animals" to deliver an oral presentation on the topic. The presentation should cover the possible purpose(s) of prehistoric cave paintings, how cave paintings were produced, the locations of famous cave paintings, and the symbols and images that frequently appear in those paintings. You may also wish to include the following in your presentation:

 your own renditions of the cave paintings you have seen

 maps indicating the locations of key discoveries of human and symbol paintings

 diagrams indicating some of the methods used by cave painters
