Occupational Summary:
The Manager of Public Education is responsible for the design and implementation of the
museum’s education programs for the general public. Also performs the duties of either the
Educator for Adult and Community Programs or the Educator for K-12 and Family Programs
(described below).
Supervises the Educator for Adult/Community Programs or the Educator for K-12/Family
Programs position as well as Gallery Guides, interns, and volunteers. This position reports
directly to the Head of Education and Interpretation.
Work Performed :
Supervises the hiring, training, and evaluation of part-time Gallery Guide staff to give tours and
engage with museum visitors. Gallery Guides include a mix of community members and
university students.
Creates and manages budget for Public (K-12/Family and Adult/Community) education
programs.
Manages and evaluates Duke Student interns and volunteers working in the department.
Reviews interpretive materials, such as wall text, explanatory labels, and museum publications,
Before distribution to the public.
Performs other related duties as required.
Educator for K-12 and Family Programs
o Develops and implements educational programs for the museum's K-12 students
including tours, materials, gallery activities, and teacher training
o Develops and implements educational programs for the museum's family
audiences, including Family Day events and Summer Make & Take programs
o Promotes K-12 and family programs in the community
o Trains Gallery Guides on K-12 tours and best practices for student and family
audiences
o Assists with supervision of Gallery Guide staff, as well as Duke student interns,
and volunteers
o Oversees the logistical coordination of the museum's school visits
o Manages the budget for K-12 and Family education programs
Educator for Adult and Community Programs

Develops and implements educational programs relating to the museum's collections
and exhibitions for the museum's adult and community audiences, including tours,
materials, gallery activities, and teacher training
Develops and implements the Reflections Alzheimer's project and Art with the
Experts program at local libraries
Promotes adult and community programs
Trains Gallery Guides on best practices for adult and general public tours and
adult audiences
Assists with supervision of Gallery Guides, as well as Duke student interns, and
volunteers
Manages the budget for Adult and Community education programs
Required Qualifications
Bachelor Degree in art history, museum education, or related field, or equivalent experience. 5-7
years’ experience in museum education.
Excellent writing, communications, and project management skills. Strong people skills and the
ability to manage and motivate others. Ability to work well with others, ability to manage
projects independently, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
