Supplies can get low at this time of year so please remember to donate
TEA, COFFEE and SUGAR to St. Wilfrid's Centre before you go away
on holiday. Thank you.
SCRIPTURE NOTE: Today we begin a series of six Sunday gospels on
the Eucharist. As this year’s gospel (Mark) is too short to provide
readings for the whole year, the Church takes five Sunday readings from
the Bread of Life Discourse in John’s Gospel, introducing them with the
account of the Feeding in Mark’s Gospel. The story of the Feeding can
be read on several levels. The event is a foretaste of the Eucharist, with
the disciples gathered round Jesus as the new Israel (12 baskets for the
12 tribes) for a fully satisfying meal, the messianic banquet.
Furthermore, Jesus is the good shepherd who feeds his flock, according
to Psalm 23, on the green pastures beside the restful waters of the Lake
of Galilee. Jesus is also the prophet like Moses who provides manna for
his people in the desert or, more precisely, he is like Elisha in 2 Kings 4
(next Sunday’s first reading). The story in Mark’s account of the Feeding
is recounted in terms which deliberately recall these and other biblical
scenes, to enrich and deepen our understanding of what is happening.
How does this reading help you understand how the Lord gathers and
prepares us to be fed through his gift of the Eucharist?
REFLECTION: Sheep without a shepherd
Lord, look upon us and take pity on us, for at times we too are like
sheep. Save us from a blind following of the herd. Help us to listen to
your voice, to trust you and to follow you, even if it means leaving the
crowd and walking a lonely path. Lead us from fear to trust, from error to
truth, from hate to love, from war to peace, from despair to hope, and
from death to life.
Amen
PARISH PRAYER
Heavenly Father, pour down on our Church your Holy Spirit, the fire of
your love. Give us the courage, the wisdom and the faith to be salt for
the earth and light for the world.
Help us to build warm and welcoming communities of faith in our
families, our neighbourhoods, our Parish. May we carry the Good News
by word and action into all our environments, especially those which are
hostile and hurting.
Together with Mary, the first evangeliser we entrust all our efforts into
the care of the Divine Spirit, who fills and renews the face of the earth.
Amen.

The S2 FOOD BANK welcomes our donations. They are especially
keen to receive tinned potatoes, instant mash, rice pudding, custard,
UHT Milk, corned beef, stewed meat, chilli, curry and other meat and
fish tins. They have a surplus of baked beans and pasta so would prefer
not to have these donated. Thank you for your generosity.
