2013 AWIS STAR CHAPTER AWARD
INFORMATION AND APPLICATION
The Association for Women in Science’s Strategic Plan is the blueprint for organizational growth
and success in the future. For the strategic plan to be effective, it must be implemented through a
partnership between AWIS National and the local chapters. As each chapter contributes its part to the
overall Strategic Plan, AWIS will be farther along in meeting its goals to continue to champion the
interests of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Program Mission
The AWIS Star Chapter Award honors those chapters who have accomplished many of the key
objectives outlined in the Strategic Plan. The award encourages chapters to perform specific
activities designed to ensure that women in STEM fields are able to achieve their full potential.
Based on input from the AWIS Board and Chapters Committee, AWIS National will publish a list of
chapter goals, as outlined in the Star Chapter Award application. Chapters that successfully
accomplish 12 of those goals during the fiscal year – and submit a completed award application form
for verification by September 30, 2013 for activities completed during fiscal year 2012-13 (which
starts July 1 and ends June 30) – will be honored with a 2013 AWIS Star Chapter Award.
Eligibility
All AWIS Chapters in good standing can earn the AWIS Star Chapter Award. There is no limit to the
number of AWIS Star Chapter Awards that can be presented in a given year. Regardless of size,
budget or resources, as long as a chapter fulfills the necessary goals, it is eligible to receive the award.
The application must be signed by the chapter president and one other chapter officer.
Process and Deadline
The AWIS Star Chapter Award goals may change every year, reflecting adjustments in the Strategic
Plan and in AWIS itself, although some goals may be constant. A few goals will be required of all
chapters; however, chapters will get to decide which of the optional goals they wish to accomplish.
A chapter must submit the completed award application form by the deadline date. All nominations
must be received on or before September 30, 2013. If mailed, the form must be postmarked no later
than September 30, 2013.
All application forms will be acknowledged to the sender by email. If you do not receive a
confirmation of receipt, please contact AWIS National to verify your materials arrived by the
deadline.
Rev July 11 2013
AWIS National reserves the right to confirm and verify goals on a nomination-by-nomination basis
as it deems appropriate. The AWIS Chapters Committee will make final determination on any
disputed applications.
