Text: Pearson Prentice Hall Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology
Replacement Cost: $79
Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with a foundation of the study of the human
body. Throughout the semester we will cover such topics as science process skills, body organization, health
concerns and anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and brain, the senses, circulatory system,
respiratory system, endocrine system, urinary and digestive systems, nutrition and the reproductive system.
Participation in demonstrations, discussions, cooperative learning groups and laboratory investigations is
expected. Students will be required to work individually and as a member of a team.
Reading: This course involves reading of the textbook and related articles. It is imperative that the student
keeps up with the required reading in order to participate in class discussions.
Homework – will consist of work that is sent home to be completed or worksheets done in class.
Materials
 a set of 50 or more colored pencils
 6 or more rolls of paper towels
 box of latex-free gloves
 Textbook – if damages occur or the bar code is missing, you will be held responsible. Textbooks may
not be left in the classroom, and teachers are not responsible for students’ books once they have been
issue to the student.
 3-ring binder & notebook paper
 highlighter
 pens/pencils
 notecards for studying
Classwork/ Homework/Major Assignments Policy
1. All classwork/homework is expected to be turned in on time; all late work is recorded as a zero (0) until
late work/make up work is entered into the grade book system.
2. If work is turned in late, the following penalties will be assessed
a. 1 day late = 70% maximum
b. 2 or more days late = 0%
3. All major assignments turned in late will incur a 10% deduction per day up to three (3) days late. After
three (3) days, the assignment will receive a zero (0).
4. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher for make-up work after being absent. This
includes notes.
5. If you are absent the day before an announced quiz or test, you will still be required to take the quiz or
test. Extenuating circumstances will be evaluated on a case by case basis.
Grading Policy:
Assignments will be placed into the following categories:
Test or Major projects
Quizzes
Class Assignments
(daily/homework)
Labs or hands-on Activities
Midterm & Final Exams
35%
15%
5%
25%
20%
Tests and Quizzes: Written tests and quizzes include information from class notes, the textbook, handouts,
lab activities, and demonstrations.
Laboratory Activities: Labs are an important part of the curriculum. Each person in the lab group is
responsible for participating in the lab in class and completing the lab questions and/or report on his/her own
paper. Labs will be graded for accuracy and/or completion. Lab make-ups will be scheduled on as needed
basis. Lab clean-up is a part of your lab grade. Make sure to give yourself time to clean. Late passes will not
be given to your next class.
Honors Science Classes
All Honor Science students are expected to investigate a question in science that relates to their science curriculum,
review the literature, and produce a report of their findings with documentation and a works cited page. Students will
be asked to send their report to turnitin.com. The website checks the submission for plagiarism, provides a receipt for
the student to give to the teacher, and reports to the teacher that the student’s work was not copied from any source.
Students are also strongly encouraged to participate in Science Fair & Science Olympiad.
Any student who aspires to attend the Governors Honors Program in science or pursue science in future studies should
consider participating in one or more of these activities.
Dissection: Dissection is an integral part of Anatomy and Physiology. We will be using the organisms for
comparative analysis and understanding.
Grade Determination: The Fulton County Grading Scale will be used for all graded assignments.
100% B=80%-89% C=70%-79% F= below 70%
A=90%-
Cambridge HS Recovery Policy: Recovery is available for students who score at or below 75 on summative
assessments and wish to show increased mastery through relearning and reassessment. Only one recovery
attempt per summative assessment will be allowed and must be completed before the next summative
assessment (usually 1 – 2 weeks). The student must initiate the recovery process and must meet all the
teacher’s requirements (help sessions, practice work, etc.) within the teacher-given time period. A
contract/agreement with all requirements should be signed by the teacher, student, and parent/guardian. The
recovery assessment may be in a different format but will cover the same standards. The student will receive
the higher grade, up to 75. The expectation is that the student’s recovery grade will show a significant
improvement in mastery of standards.
Recovery Policy Eligibility for Honors A&P
1. Student’s summative assessment grade 75 or lower.
2. Students should request to meet with teacher to discuss recovery.
3. Student and teacher will agree on a summative assessment that will be recovered.
4. Student will complete assignment(s) relevant to the mastery of the standard(s) covered in that summative
assessment.
5. Student will meet with teacher to review assignment(s) and schedule date for recovery assessment .
6. Teacher will input new grade up to 75.
Expected Classroom Behaviors: All student handbook rules apply in this class including the Honor
Code/Plagiarism section. Be prompt. Be quietly seated with your class materials out when the bell rings. Do
not talk during instruction. Respect your classmates and teachers. Food and beverages other than water are
not allowed in the class. Lab safety rules apply in this class.
Consequences: 1. Warning 2. 30 min detention before or after school 3. Parent contact and another
detention
4. Referral to an administrator
Cell phones and listening devices: all cell phones and head phones need to be put away (out of sight)
during class. All students will be reminded at the beginning of class as a warning. Detentions will be given to
students who use them during class. The only exception will be for use when I have given permission.
Course Outline: We cover A LOT of difficult material throughout the year. It will be to your advantage
to keep current with the material and ask questions frequently.
