Chapter 3: Lies About Themselves
The Lie
Living the Lie
Truth in Scripture
Living the Truth
7. I’m not worth anything
Depression, addictions, selfdestructive behaviors , seeking
the approval of others, aiming low
for a fulfilled life; ashamed to
approach God’s throne with
confidence
Freedom and confidence to live
a full, abundant life; investment
in activities that grow
knowledge and faith
8. I need to learn to love
myself
Contant internal focus, higher
priority on self than others, internal
focus vs. outward
9. I can’t help the way I am
Unrepentant; unwillingness to
change; justification for all sins;
argumentative
10. I have my rights
Entitlement, pursuing worldly and
not earthly treasures; bitterness
towards others who appear to
have more
Misguided focus on external looks;
higher priority on exercise,
physical conditioning/grooming
than time with God, and inner
beauty
My value is not determined by
what others think of me or what
I think of myself. My value is
determined by how God views
me. (Psalm 139:1-18, Eph 1:38), I am God’s cherished
possession and treasure (Rom
8:1-2, 13,15-17, 1 Pet 2:9)
By faith, I need to receive
God’s love for me (Gal 2:20,
Heb 11); I already love myself.
I need to deny myself and let
God love others through me
(Matt 16:24-26, John 15:12)
I can choose to obey God
(Rom 6:1-14, 8:1-2); I am
responsible for my own choices
(Deut 30:19; Josh 24:15)
Claiming rights will put me in
bondage (Jonah 4, Psalm 27:111); Yielding rights will set me
free. (John 6:38; Heb 10:7)
At best, physical beauty is
temporal and fleeting (Prov
31:30); The beauty that matters
most to God is that of my inner
spirit and charater (1 Sam
16:7; 1 Tim 2:9)
I will always have unfulfilled
longings this side of heaven
(Rom 8:23); The deepest
longings of my heart cannot be
filled by any created person or
thing. (Psalm 16:11)
11. Physical beauty matters
more than inner beauty
12. I should not have to live
with unfulfilled longings
Bitterness when longings aren’t
met; Disobeying God’s laws or His
will to pursue the longings apart
from Him
Seeing the needs of others and
serving; Making the
relationship with God the
number 1 priority
Repentant, vulnerable,
relationships with depth and
accountability, experiencing
forgiveness and grace
Thankfulness for God’s graces,
Freedom from superficial
pressures;
Waiting on the Lord, deep
prayer life,
