Les Jeux Olympiques

Pierre de Coubertin founded the first modern Olympic Games in 1892. They took place in

Athens, Greece, where 241 athletes, representing 14 nations, participated. In today’s games, approximately 10,500 athletes participate, representing 200 delegations. Coubertin also designed the Olympic flag with its five rings and created the motto of the Games: plus vite, plus haut, plus fort (faster, higher, stronger). The original flag made its debut in 1920. The flame, symbol of the link between the modern and ancient Games, was added in 1928. In addition to the official flag and motto, the Olympics have three official languages: French,

English, and the language of the host country.

Le hockey sur glace au Canada

Ice hockey is one of Canada’s national pastimes. The country has six professional teams, the

Montréal Canadiens being the oldest and biggest winner in the National

HockeyLeague (NHL). Many Canadian players begin the sport as children, then play in the Junior Hockey leagues between the ages of 16 and 20 before moving on to the pros. It’s not surprising that after ice hockey became an Olympic sport in 1920, the

Canadians took home six of the seven first gold medals.
