Materials Needed: Large quantity of Fiction and non-fiction books
Chart paper or white board comments from the last two sessions discussing fiction and non-fiction
characteristics
Preparation: Place fiction and non-fiction books on tables for sort
Standards/ Objectives: Standard 1: Standard 1: Reads widely both for information and in
pursuit of personal interests. Reads or listens to types of fiction in picture book and
novel format (realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction)
Vocabulary: Fiction/ nonfiction
Lesson Sequence: 1. Teacher will read students the chart paper from the last two sessions and lead a
discussion on fiction and non-fiction
2. Show students examples of fiction books and non-fiction books
3. Put students in groups and have them sort the books on the tables
4. Discuss with students why they chose to put particular books in a fiction or non-fiction pile
