Teaching the Adolescent Singer
Students will study psychological, physiological, behavioral and developmental aspects of the young
singer. An in-depth look at the characteristics of the changing male and female voice will include research
and conclude with observations of adolescent voices. The class will also cover range, registration and
choral repertoire appropriate for the various stages of the adolescent singer. Engagement with the Vocal
Arts Project will be an exciting aspect of this course. (3 graduate credits)

String Pedagogy: Improving String Performance through the Application of Cognitive, Behavioral and
Constructivist Learning Theories
In this course, students will delve deeply into improving student learning and performance in the string
orchestra classroom through the application of cognitive, behavioral and constructivist learning theories.
Students will also explore the psychological underpinnings that impact crucial aspects of successful string
instruction such as motivation, recruiting and retention, performance anxiety, memory, attention, student
self-efficacy and effective leadership. Special emphasis will be placed on the application of these learning
theories as well as the latest brain research as they relate to effective instruction in the areas of
fundamental instrument technique and expressive musicality. (3 graduate credits)

History and Literature of the Wind Band (2016/2019)
In this class students will study the historical development of wind bands and wind band repertoire. The
result of this study will be to enable students to evaluate new repertoire by comparison to masterworks
and to be able to place pieces into a historical continuum. Studying the history of wind bands is necessary
to understand the current state of the profession and how wind bands fit into the broader spectrum of
music history. (3 graduate credits)
