St Michael-le-Belfrey
Low Petergate, York YO1 7HH
www.stmichaelsyork.org
St Michael-le-Belfrey was built between 1525 and 1536. It replaced an
earlier mediaeval church that was so badly maintained that parishioners
were afraid to enter the building for services. The church probably takes its
name from the Minster Belfry which stood here before the church was built.
Guy Fawkes, the infamous Gunpowder Plot conspirator, was born in nearby
Stonegate and was baptised in this church. The magnificent reredos (behind
the altar) and altar rails were made by the York-born artist, John Etty, in
1712.
