Charleston, S.C. (May 19, 2014) - If you were told the next Katrina or Hugo was on the way,
would you be ready? Please join us for the 15th Annual MUSC Hurricane Awareness Day.
Meteorologists and emergency management experts are clear in their messages that arrival of the next
big hurricane in the Palmetto state is not a question of if, but when.
“The goal of the event is to equip members of our community to prepare for, respond to and
recover from a hurricane by providing them with multiple resources and information all in one location in
order to help them prepare on all levels for a dangerous storm.” -Amanda Ritsema, MUSC Risk
Management
A panel of experts, including a representative from NOAA, will be assembled to educate eventgoers during a panel discussion where questions will be encouraged. Panel members will include
members of response and sheltering operations. Organizations such as the Charleston Animal Society
and the American Red Cross will be on hand to help attendees make their family hurricane plans. Various
emergency management staff from MUSC will be available helping students, faculty and staff make
campus-related preparations.
Opportunity for our media partners:
Members of the media will have an opportunity to interview panel members. (If you would like to
arrange a pre-scheduled interview time, please contact Amanda Ritsema at the email or phone number
listed above)
While the goal of the day is to give the community the tools they need to prepare in advance for a
