An opportunity has arisen to join our friendly radiographic team at Dumfries and
Galloway. The department has recently been refurbished and offers a wide range of
imaging modalities.

2. JOB PURPOSE
To assist Radiographic staff in the provision of general X-ray services and assist Radiologists in
specialised areas. The post holder will help maintain the professional radiographic standards of
the department.
3. ORGANISATIONAL POSITION

RADIOGRAPHIC HELPER
The postholder is managed by the Senior Radiographer in charge of the general X-ray department
and is ultimately responsible to the Area Radiographer.
4. SCOPE AND RANGE
Under the direction of the Senior Radiographer, the postholder will be responsible for assisting
professional staff with a range of procedures in the department, as per duty rota.
Day-to day duties include:
 Provide a high standard of service to the patient and service users by exercising good
patient care and updating technical and theoretical knowledge.
 To bring to the attention of senior staff any problems of a general nature and in particular,
incidents and accidents.
 All equipment faults should be immediately reported to senior staff.
 Promotion of effective and comprehensive communication within the department.
 Liaising and working with other staff within the department to ensure the commitments of
the department are fulfilled.
The total number of examinations performed within the department is approximately
70,000 per annum.
5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Your performance must comply with the Mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare Support
Workers in Scotland as well as the Code of Conduct. Failure to adhere to the Standards or to
comply with the Code may result in poor performance measures or disciplinary action and

could lead to dismissal.
Input patient data to the Radiology Management computer system.
Assist radiographic staff during patient procedures (general and CT).
Assist Radiologists during Ultrasound sessions
Escort patients to and from wards, if required.
Ensure safe disposal of sharps boxes from specific areas.
Cleaning of CRcassettes
Promote effective and comprehensive communication within the department.
Liaise / work with others to ensure that the commitments of the department are fulfilled.
Work with the Senior Radiographer and Area Radiographer to devise mechanisms to continuously
improve patient care within the general section of the department.
Assist the Superintendent Radiographer with the collection of information for Clinical Audit
purposes and the maintenance of continuing personal development and training.
Mentor new members of staff.
Liaise as required with other hospital staff to ensure that the commitments of the service are
fulfilled.
Ensure that all processing equipment is kept in safe working order by reporting faults to the
radiographer in charge and liaise with engineers as required (at peripheral hospitals).
Ensure that all advice relating to Health and Safety is observed.
Comply with the Data Protection Act.
Attend courses / updates as required.
6. SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT
The postholder must be fully conversant with the safe operation of the following:
 Radiology Information computer system, i.e. computerised patient management system.
 All items of CR equipment
 Moving and Handling equipment.
7. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS
The postholder will be expected to:
 Work under the direct supervision of Radiographic and Radiological staff.
 Work unsupervised at times, following departmental policies, protocols and procedures.
 Show a high level of initiative.
 Assess patient’s physical condition and abilities before moving / handling patients for
imaging examinations.

8. COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS
The postholder will be expected to liaise, as required, other hospital officers to ensure that the
commitments of the service are fulfilled.
Communication on a daily basis will include telephone contacts, face-to-face interactions and
interpretation of written communications.
In addition, the postholder will be expected to interact, on a daily basis, with patients, relatives and
the general public. This communication will include provision of reassurance as and when required.
9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
Physical Skills :
To assist with the manipulation patients and equipment, to enable professional staff to acquire
diagnostic images. Speed and accuracy are essential to minimise patient
examination time.
Physical Efforts:
There is a frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several periods during a shift.
This involves moving / lifting patients, patient records, X-ray CR
cassettes and patient trolleys from a standing start. Moving and handling often takes place in
confined spaces, eg. ultrasound room
10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB
Emotional Demands
 Dealing with difficult patients, relatives and members of staff.
 Occasional exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances, assisting with trauma
cases
Mental Demands
 Sustaining concentration through examination procedures
Working Conditions
 Occasional exposure to vomit, urine, blood
 Occasional exposure to processing chemical fumes (peripheral hospitals).
 Occasionally confined working in processing darkroom (peripheral hospitals).

11. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQIRED TO DO THE JOB
 Good communication skills
 Ability to work on own initiative as well as in a team situation
 A commitment to continuing personal development and training.
 SVQ3 (or equivalent) is required, or evidence of equivalent relevant work experience.
