Geometry Engage NY
M.1.A Basic Geometric Constructions (8 days)
Engage NY Lessons: Module 1 Lessons 1-5
Vocabulary:
Angle, Interior of an Angle, Angle Bisector, Bisector, Perpendicular, Parallel, Perpendicular Bisector, Angle, Segment,
Geometric Construction, Right Angle, Complementary, Supplementary, Equilateral Triangle, Vertex, Circle, Radius, Diameter,
Equidistant, Congruent, Compass, Straightedge, Ray, Point of Concurrency
Test Specifications:
 Students give technical definitions for: right angle, perpendicular, equidistant.
 Students learn to construct an equilateral triangle. (M1, L1 and L2; 2 days)
 Students learn how to bisect an angle as well as how to copy an angle. (M1, L3; 1 day)
 Students learn how to construct parallel lines (M1, L4)
 Students apply geometric constructions to solve problems arising with issues of design and location of facilities. (M1,
L4; 2 days)
 Students learn to construct a perpendicular bisector and about the relationship between symmetry with respect to a
line and a perpendicular bisector. ( M1, L5: 1 day)
 Students communicate mathematic ideas effectively and efficiently. (Throughout the lessons) Make formal geometric
constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding,
dynamic geometric software, etc.).
Common Core Standards:
 G-CO.1 Know precise definitions of angle, circle, perpendicular line, parallel line, and line segment, based on the
undefined notions of point, line, distance along a line, and distance around a circular arc.
 G-CO.12 Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and straightedge, string,
reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software, etc.). Copying a segment; copying an angle; bisecting a
segment; bisecting an angle; constructing perpendicular lines, including the perpendicular bisector of a line segment;
and constructing a line parallel to a given line through a point not on the line.
 G-CO.13 Construct an equilateral triangle, a square, and a regular hexagon inscribed in a circle.
