Metamorphic Rock Lab Activity (Standard S6E5 c.)
Purpose: To model foliated and nonfoliated metamorphic rocks according to the arrangement of their mineral grains
(texture).
Materials: Modeling play-doh, string, small sequins, wood blocks

1. Mix sequins into one ball of clay.
2. Use a 30cm piece of string to cut the ball in half. How are the sequins arranged?
3. Draw a diagram of your model.
4. What kind of metamorphic rock does this represent? (Foliated or Nonfoliated- Circle one). What evidence do
you have to support this claim? (Use information from your notes or the text.)
5. Roll the clay with the sequins back into a ball. Now slowly press down on the ball with the block until the stack
is about 3 cm high. Now cut the clay in half again. How are the sequins arranged?
