Entry Task: Locate,
read, and file the grade 10 WEEKLY AGENDA sheet located on top of the window counter area; have the necessary
materials ready with a proper heading on your paper.----------------------------------------------------------------------SPRINGBOARD GRADE 10 GOALS - UNIT 1: To analyze how culture affects identity and perceptions; to practice effective speaking and
listening skills that build capacity for collaboration and communication; to analyze the concept of voice in reading and writing; to analyze
and apply syntactic structures in writing -----IEP LEARNING TARGETS: Writing - Students will demonstrate reading comprehension analysis
after reading literature stories/selections. Students will demonstrate proper paragraph format and editing of grammar & mechanics when
responding to comprehension questions. LEARNING TARGET –Writing - Students will produce clear and coherent writing in which the
development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to
support analysis. LEARNING TARGET –Reading –-By the end of grade 9 & 10, students will read and comprehend literature, including stories,
dramas, and poems, in the grades 9-10 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. Learning

10-27-15 Activity 1.9 –Previewing Embedded Assessment 2 & Preparing for a Writing Prompt – Learning Targets: Identify knowledge and
skills needed to complete Assessment 2 successfully. Deconstruct a writing prompt. Read “Making Connections & Vocabulary Development.
Answer the Essential Qs. UNPACK Embedded Assessment #2 by creating a graphic organizer summarizing skills needed to be successful at
writing a 5 paragraph synthesis essay.–Writing a Synthesis Paper--- Collaborate w/your peers to write an essay one: “To what extent does
one’s culture inform the way one views others and the world?” Read and complete pages 48-49. Complete the writing prompts.
10-28-15 Activity 1.10 –Colliding Worlds – Learning Target: Analyze the structure of a text to explain how the author unfolds a series of ideas
for effect. Read Before Reading, During Reading, and About the Author. Read the essay “Where Worlds Collide” and highlight main ideas.
Answer all key ideas/details Qs. Complete the writing prompt and check your understanding in paragraph format.
11-3-15 -Activity 1.11 – Perspectives on Heritage: Poetry – Learning Targets: Analyze a poem for the author’s use of literary devices to
explain how specific stylistic choices support the development of tone and theme. Develop strategies for organizing ideas. Read the Before
Reading, During Reading, and About the Author. Read the poem “My Mother Pieced Quilts” and highlight main ideas. Answer the Key Qs.
Complete the table on page 56 and answer After Reading Q #4. Respond to the Synthesis Writing Prompt, p.57 & complete the check your
understanding.
11-9-15- Activity 1.12 – Perspectives on Heritage: Fiction – Learning Targets-Analyze a work of fiction to determine & explain the theme of
the work. Compare and contrast how two different authors explore similar subjects and themes. Read Before Reading, During Reading, and
About the Author. Read “Everyday Use” and highlight main ideas; answer all KEY Ideas-details Qs. Complete pages 66-68… Complete the
Writing Prompt in paragraph format.
Activity 1.13 Perspectives on Heritage: Nonfiction – Learning Targets- Compare/Contrast characters in a nonfiction text. Draw conclusions
about individuals’ responses to culture and explain conclusions in a timed essay. Read pages 69 -73 and respond to ALL Qs including Key
Ideas/Details and graphic organizers. Complete the Writing Prompt in paragraph format.
Activity 1.14 – Argumentation in “An Indian Father’s Plea” – Learning Targets: Analyze the structure of an argument. Construct an argument
effectively in a persuasive letter. Read and respond to all Qs as well as Key Ideas/Details & graphic organizers on pages 74- 80. Complete the
Writing Prompt in paragraph format.
Activity 1.15 – Synthesis- Drafting Your Position – Learning Targets: Collaborate with group member to reach a consensus in response to a
synthesis prompt. Synthesize various sources to formulate a position and state it in a thesis statement. Read and respond to all Qs on pages
81-82; complete the writing prompt on page 81 in complete sentence format.
Activity 1.16 – Synthesis – Presenting Your Position – Learning Targets: Collaborate to plan a synthesis essay by revising a thesis statement
and mapping out an organizational strategy. Read and respond to all Qs on pages 83-84.
Embedded Assessment #2 TEST – Writing a
Synthesis Paper: Your assignment is to collaborate with your peers to write a 5 paragraph essay that responds to the following synthesis
prompt- To what extent does one’s culture inform the way one views the others and the world? You must use 3 different texts you have
read, viewed, listened to in this unit, as well as personal experience/insights. Complete & respond to all Qs on page 85 which is your Prewriting Planning guide.
Exit Task: Verbal review of academic and literary terms for unit one.
