CT Goat Day 2014 Workshop Descriptions
ADGA Breed Characteristics- Looking to improve your game in the show ring when answering those tricky questions about
breeds of goats? Or, are you looking to improve the standards of your own herd? Join Melissa Ferguson as we discuss dairy
goat breed characteristics, as well as examine breed standards, defects, and disqualifications. We will also discuss how to work
towards getting unregistered animals and/or their offspring registered with ADGA.
All Goats Are Not Created Equally- Nancy Hayes will lead a hands-on activity to evaluate how not all goats are equal.
Care of Doe from Breeding to Kidding- Join Dr. McClure to discuss the steps to care for a doe from breeding through kidding.
Cheesemaking- Dorothy Hayes and Ellen Whitlow, of SweetPea Cheese, will teach participants about making goat milk cheese.
CT Goat Project Record Book Sheet- Join State Record Book Committee Members, Amy and Abby Smith, to learn about
completing the Connecticut Goat Project Record Book Sheets.
Dairy Goat Showmanship-Justin Lesniak, ADGA Apprentice Judge, is offering a hands-on experience to teach the basics of dairy
goat showmanship or to advance your showmanship skills.
Evaluating the Goat- Jeremy Lesniak, ADGA judge and 2014 Big E 4-H Goat Show Judge, will instruct about evaluating an
animal’s strengths and faults.
Fecal Flotation- Cindy Chotkowski will demonstrate the proper way to perform a fecal floatation. Bring a fecal sample from
your herd to test during the workshop. Learn about common parasites found in the goat.
Fiber Goat Shearing- Join Liz Henson as she demonstrates the process of shearing a fiber goat.
Goat Kidding- It’s kidding time what should you do? Join Melissa Ferguson to learn to identify each stage of labor. She will
provide helpful hints of when to assist the doe. Learn different kinds of delivery presentation and what to do to have a
successful delivery. Try your hand at a kidding simulator with live kids to experience one of these difficult deliveries.
Goat Knowledge and Craft- Join 4-H’er, Conor Smith, for a hands-on activity to learn more about goat general knowledge and
to participate in a craft project.
Goat Purse Craft- This hands-on workshop with Heather Lavoie will provide participants with an opportunity to make a felt
goat purse to take home. Show your design talent and make it to look like your favorite goat friend.
Goat Veterinary Care- Join Dr. McClure to learn about the ways to determine the health of a goat as well as routine health
procedures to keep your goat healthy.
Marketing Your Goat Farm- Have you wanted to market your farm online or at a farmer’s market? Join Lara Reynolds to
learn more about getting started in farm marketing and promotion. For those 12 and older.
Milking, Hoof Trimming and Fitting- Join Tess Clark to learn about safe milking techniques, proper milking techniques, and
fitting for show.
Necropsy of the Goat- Observe a necropsy of a goat being conducted. This workshop is intended for older 4-H’ers.
What the Research Shows on Kidding and Proper Herd Management- A successful kidding seasons begins far earlier than the
onset of labor. If you improved your herd management, would you have healthier kids born? Come learn about the details of
Cornell’s recent study on herd management and kidding with Erica Fearn and share ideas to improve your best management
practices and develop a calendar for proper herd management.
