Game On: Crop Duster of the Midwest
Rules:







You must earn the correct amount of points before moving on to the next level.
There are certain challenges you MUST complete. These are marked with
REQUIRED.
Some assignments will be graded! These are marked.
You earn points for each challenge you complete. If you are in a higher level you
can go back down and work on challenges from a lower level; however, they are not
worth as many points.
This can be worked on in class and at home. If you want to move through the levels
quickly, you will have to work at home!
Please keep track of your own points and finished assignments on your record
sheet. I will also be keeping track, but I won’t be able to score the assignments
every day. I will post the top 5 scorers on the leader board once a week.

Level One: Basic Flyer
Each of the following tasks is worth 1 point. You need 10 points to complete this level.
Remember you may come back and complete more of these for extra points at any time.

Level Two: Lieutenant Flyer
Each of the following tasks is worth 2 points. You need 15 points to complete this level.
Remember you may come back and complete more of these for extra points at any time.
1) REQUIRED: Fill in a map of the Midwest with the 12 states, 12 state capitals, and
the great lakes. *graded*
2) REQUIRED: Fill in a map of the Midwest with the 12 states and label an important
site within each state. *graded*
3) View the “Midwest Song” video on Hippocampus or here:

summarizing important facts from the video.
4) View the “Mt. Rushmore Rocks” video on Hippocampus or here:

each president tells.
5) View the “Mall of America Tour” video here: http://vimeo.com/7970789 and write
about a few interesting sites on the tour.
6) Rank five of the sites in the Midwest from 1-5 (1 being the highest) of places you
would like to visit. Write a sentence that gives a reason for your ranking.
7) List the main crops grown in Iowa.
8) Sketch a picture and add captions to explain the role of cowboys in Dodge City,
Kansas.
9) In a short paragraph, explain why Detroit is known as “Motor City.”
10) View the “CBS Ford Anniversary” video on Hippocampus or here

the Ford assembly line.
Award Assignment: make a chart of each of the four seasons. In the chart tell about the
major weather of each season and how it affects the Midwest (autumn may be left blank).
Level Three: Captain
Each of the following tasks is worth 5 points. You need 25 points to complete this
level. Remember you may come back and complete more of these for extra points at
any time.
1) REQUIRED: Use the Cowboy graphic organizer to imagine what life is like for
cowboys out on the trail or range. Write a paragraph describing what they taste,
smell, see, hear, and feel.
2) REQUIRED: Define all of the following words: frontier, prairie, fertile, livestock,
meatpacking, reservation, assembly line, transportation hub *graded*
3) Make a Venn diagram comparing your life to life in the Midwest.
4) Pretend you are on a vacation with your family in the Midwest. Write blog entries
from each place you visit in the Midwest. You will receive 5 points for each entry.
Level Four: Major
Each of the following tasks is worth 20 points. You need 60 points to complete this
level. Remember you may come back and complete more of these for extra points at
any time.
1) Form a group with two other students at this level. As a team, imagine that you are
carmakers in the beginning of the 20th century. Each of the cars you make is
special. No two are exactly alike. Get a large sheet of paper and crayons or
markers. With the other two students in your group, design and draw a car with
these features:
 All of the features that make a car work (steering wheel, tires, windshield,
and so on)
 Attractive wheel covers
 An interesting hood ornament
 A paint job that uses two colors
 Interesting headlights
 Any other features you think customers would like.

2) Form a group with 5 other students at this level. Imagine you are a worker on
Ford’s assembly line in the 1920s. Each of the cars you make is exactly alike.
Follow these directions:
 Each student needs a marker or crayon
 Each student should have a worker number from 1-6 and know which part of
the Model T they are supposed to draw.
Worker 1: front tires
Worker 2: Rear tires
Worker 3: Both headlights
Worker 4: Steering wheel
Worker 5: Windshield
Worker 6: Rear door
 Ask a teacher to be the whistle blower
 Sit shoulder to shoulder
 Place 50 copies of the “cars” on the first person’s desk
 Start working when you hear the whistle blow
 Run your assembly line for 10 minutes
 Count all completed cars
When you’re done, answer the questions on Tour Site 6: Detroit, Michigan
SECTION B
3) Make a mini-poster or pamphlet (rubric supplied). Choose a site you have studied.
Make a poster or pamphlet that would entice someone to come visit the site you chose
(20 points for each one done).
4) Use the “Writing a Letter About the Midwest” form to compose a letter about what
you have learned. Your letter must include all parts on the form.
Award Assignment: make a timeline to show how Chicago is a major transportation hub.
Use pictures and dates. Do some extra research to find when major highways were built
and when O’Hare International Airport was built.
Level Five: Chief Master Flyer
Each of the following tasks is worth 50 points. You need 100 points to complete this
level. Remember you may come back and complete more of these for extra points at
any time.
1. REQUIRED: Take the Unit 8 test. BE SURE TO STUDY BEFORE ASKING FOR
THE TEST. A STUDY GUIDE IS AVAILABLE *Graded*
2. Form a group of 3. Use the “Tour Site 9: Minneapolis, Minnesota Changes in the
Midwest Economy at the Mall of America” to design your own Midwestern mall!
 Decide where each of the store and features of your mall should go.
 Assign each group member one page of the mall map to complete.
 On the page, write the name of each store in a store space. Draw a store
logo in each store space.
 Tape or glue the pages of your mall map together.
 Then, inside the map, draw the features that go inside the mall, such as
fountains, benches, or roller coasters.
3. Use the Poster Planner page to design and make a poster.
4. You chose: have a 50-point project idea? Come see me and we will make a plan.
For example, you could do a presentation, make a model, make a diorama, write a
little play, make a short film, etc. If you want to do something neat and
creative, talk to me and we will try to make it happen!
