Role Profile – Gardener

Main Purpose of Post

1 Specific duties and Responsibilities

1.1 Be responsible for the maintaining of our award winning grounds and gardens

1.2 To develop existing and new areas for planting and maintain a seasonal display of patio pots and hanging baskets

1.3 To participate in the recruitment of gardening volunteers and plan and oversee appropriate gardening activity for the volunteers suitable for their individual capabilities, gardening knowledge and experience

1.4 Carry out other general duties around the Hospice assisting the maintenance staff and other departments within the Hospice.

2 Main Duties & Responsibilities

2.1 Ensure the production of visually attractive seasonally planted areas, patio pots and hanging baskets within a view of all patient areas. Improve and maintain all planted areas to a good horticultural standard, including use of greenhouse for plant production and on composting arrangements.

2.1 Ensure all shrubs are pruned as appropriate to their species, protected as necessary from frost and flower beds and other areas are regularly weeded and litter picked.

2.3 Ensure the mowing and other gardening equipment is maintained

2.4 Ensure that grassed areas are kept in good condition and free of fallen leaves or other debris

2.5 Ensure that suitable arrangements are in place for the watering of planted areas as required

2.6 Ensure any work to trees is carried out in an approved manner as required by the areas conservation status and on site statutory Tree Preservation Orders in liaison with the Local Authority’s arboriculture service

2.8 Ensure all hospice roadways, footpaths patios and car park areas are kept tidy and litter free. Arrange for the regular cleaning of all garden furniture and emptying of all litter / cigarette butt containers. Assist with maintaining the safety of footpaths and roadways in icy conditions.

2.9 Assist Funeral Directors and clinical staff with deceased patients in the mortuary

3.0 Responsible for safe working practices in the grounds and gardens, directed by the

Team Leader Gardener, in particular use of garden machinery and garden spraying.

3.1. Follow manufacturers guidelines in the use of gardening chemicals used within the

Hospice grounds and promote good practice regarding Health & Safety to other members of staff and volunteer.

3.2 Incorporate new procedures and skills as required.

3.3 Keep equipment storage room neat clean and organised.

3.4 Maintain and operate drip watering system

3.5 Follow detailed worksheet form routine grounds keeping duties

3.6 To carry out numerous gardening duties requiring a minimum amount of supervision

3.7 Soil cultivation, digging forking mulching, watering raking weeding edging, pruning, bed preparation and planting.

3.8 Report any faulty appliances damaged equipment or any potential hazard.

3.9 Promote safe working practice within the Hospice.

4.0 Adhere to policy regarding the confidentiality of patient information

4.1 Monitor stock levels within the gardening store and request replacements following the agreed channels. Stock rotation should be followed at all times.

4.2 Show regard for the clinical department

4.3 Attend all mandatory training relevant to the role.
