Can you believe we are into the second month of 2013! I hope you all had a very
merry Christmas and holiday season with family and friends and that the New
Year will be a great one for everyone.
Tennis is back (not that it ever really goes away) and most competitions have
recommenced already. Let’s hope that we can bring home many flags and that
regardless, we all have a good and enjoyable season.
The end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 has been a busy but exciting time for
the club. I am sure that you will have noticed that we have been fortunate
enough to have new carpet tiles and vinyl flooring installed in our clubrooms.
What a fantastic difference it has made to the appearance and with the new
kitchen cupboard doors and drawers our clubrooms have had a real facelift. I
must thank the Nillumbik Shire Council for providing these items and for installing
them for us.
At the time I am writing this message we have had our first sets of tennis on the
rebuilt court 6. Our aim was to have the court completed in time for the start of
this current season and that is exactly what happened. Thanks to all those that
were involved in this project and a special thanks to John French who was coopted to act as project coordinator once the contract was let. John’s efforts were
instrumental in achieving the desired result. By the way please allow some time for
the court to settle down which may take several weeks.
While on the subject of courts I would like to point out that despite our best efforts
to obtain funding for this rebuild, the entire project cost of $48,400.00 has been
fully paid for from club funds. Court maintenance and a rebuild programme is a
huge cost to our club and will continue as such for the foreseeable future. Club
Committees have been vigilant over many years and will continue to ensure that
both member fees and fund raising are allocated to this ongoing programme. We
all want good courts to play on.
Also, you may have noticed that we have removed the rails in front of the
clubrooms. This has opened up the area between the clubrooms and the grass
area. Aesthetically we feel that this is an enhancement to the club and allows for
better viewing from the seats that previously were obstructed.
Thanks to donations from a number of members and the negotiating skills of Laurie
Sparks, the club now has a large screen LCD TV. It is hoped that you will enjoy
watching sporting events and the like but we do encourage limited use at other
times so that other members are not impacted.
As always, I encourage you to become actively involved in the running of the
club. If you think you can help out I would love to chat with you. Your ideas and
suggestions would also be welcomed at any time.
Good Hitting, Philip Butler – President.

COACHES CORNER
Hi there Eltham Tennis Club members,
It’s Wayne Askwith here, your club coach, with an update on some of the new programs available at the ETC.
Cardio Tennis
Starting with Adults we now have our own Cardio Tennis program which is a fun, social, group tennis-fitness
program for people of all ages and abilities. It’s more about getting a great, high-energy workout than pure
tennis technique.
You don’t have to be Rafael Nadal or Sam Stosur to enjoy the energising workout that is Cardio Tennis! Constant
movement is the focus as a Tennis Australia qualified coach guides you through a series of fun and heartpumping drills that cater for all abilities and fitness levels. Go to www.cardiotennis.com.aufor more info and call
or email me if you would like to join in on the fun.
Cardio Tennis runs for 6 weeks and cost $99. Mondays 7pm-7.45pm is for beginners to pre-competition players, or
if you have not picked up a racquet in years. The Monday 7-45-8.30pm is for competition level and it's almost full
but I can start another group at 8.30-9.15pm if you have a few players that want to come along.
Adult Group Lessons
If you would like to improve your tennis shots with a more traditional technical lesson than that offered by Cardio
Tennis, why not book into an Adult group class. This program runs for 8-weeks and costs just $135. Classes run on
Monday evenings from 7.45-8.30pm and once again I am happy to start a new group at 8.30-9.15pm if you can
bring a few more players.
Yellow Ball Program for Juniors
The Yellow ball program is for players over 12 years of age (or ready) that are pre-competition or competition
level. These lessons are group based and go for 45 minutes followed by a 45 minute Match-play session. The
program follows a learning matrix that includes all tennis shots key to tennis. Fitness, fun and conditioning
exercises are also included within the 90 minutes. Keep in mind that this program is run with a High-Performance
focus and all kids must be prepared to try their hardest at all times.
Hotshots Tennis for the little Kids
With the MLC Tennis Hot Shots program at the Eltham Tennis Club, the courts and equipment are smaller, and
the balls don’t bounce as high – perfect for new players. If you are playing MLC Tennis Hot Shots at the ETC then
you qualify for some amazing gifts and money-can’t-buy opportunities! All you have to do to claim your gifts is
complete the online claim form http://hotshots.tennis.com.au/start-playing/claim(offer ends 30 June 2013).
As well as receiving the new MLC Tennis Hot Shots T-shirt*, registered participants will:
•be eligible to enter exclusive competitions such as MLC Tennis Hot Shot of the Year where you have the
chance to win $5000 thanks to MLC and a trip to Australian Open 2013
•receive a free gift from MLC
•be eligible to play in MLC Tennis Hot Shots Tournaments
•receive monthly video tips from MLC Tennis Hot Shots Ambassador Alicia Molik.

Hunt’ Clinic. Clinics include tennis lessons, fitness, tennis and other fun games, doubles and singles
tournaments and more. Don’t miss out this time!

Members please note that the Way in Tennis School holiday program uses almost all courts from 9.30am-12.30pm
during clinic times. If you are not joining the clinic can you please organise your hitting outside of these times so
that our kids get a chance to play singles.
Private and Semi-Private Lessons
If it’s time for you to get serious, why not book a private lesson. Private lessons are great for the player that is
keen to iron out any weaknesses. There are only limited places available within the program so please let me
know if you are interested. There are early bird discounts when you combine group lessons with private lessons

Looking into the near future…
Way in Tennis will be working towards offering a Pro-Shop facility at the Eltham Tennis Club which will include a
restringing service, racquet sales, over grips, replacement grips, and more.
By supporting the Way in Tennis program we can continually improve the services that we have at the ETC.
Regards,
Wayne Askwith
