Topic: How do your community service efforts relate to what Rotary does?
The Rotary ideal of Service Above Self means that community service and helping others should be an important part of your
everyday life. Visit www.rotaryla5.org and click on “Service Projects” in the top bar for more information about the Los Angeles
Rotary Club’s Service Projects. When writing your answer, consider the following:
The Objectives of Rotary
1.
The development of friendship as an opportunity for service to others.
2.
High ethical standards in business and professions, the opportunity to serve society. For students, consider examples
from your volunteer activities, including church volunteer activities, school fundraisers, performance activities, tutoring
or mentoring of younger students, community cleanups and other community service activities like advocating for the
homeless, elderly and animal rights. How do these activities fit into your code of conduct?
3.
The application of the “ideal of service” in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life. For students, think
about your position and the extent of your involvement in volunteer services. Have you been part of a leadership
development program like RYLA, LAUSD’s Beyond the Bell’s Take Action Ambassadors Program, SOSMentor
Shaping Our Students or other leadership-training program(s) where you carried out a number of responsibilities
related to a community service project? Also consider participation and leadership in ROTC, Band, Decathlon, Debate,
Music, Art or Theater. If possible, include statistics related to number of activities/events.
