“Let’s Look at London”

Last year we had a “time travel” virtual tour of New York but how well do we know our own capital? We have all visited the
great galleries and museums but do we actually appreciate the totality of art in London? Alexandra, who is a graphic designer,
an Official Guide to the City of London and a guide and lecturer at Tate Britain and Tate Modern, will take us on three
virtual walks around the Streets of the “Square mile”. On the first we will learn of the magical qualities of stained glass
windows in the historic churches of the City of London - windows both old and modern created by a series of
remarkable artists and craftsmen in a variety of styles. We will discover their symbolism, spiritual dimensions and
above all the radiant visual beauty. On our “second walk” we will explore the unique relationship between sculptor
and architect at the turn of the twentieth century which led to the creation of many remarkable friezes, facades and
reliefs on buildings in the City of London. We will learn about Arts and Crafts, Beaux-Arts, Edwardian Baroque and
the arrival of the Modern movement. After lunch we will discover the wealth of modern and contemporary public art,
creations ranging from the hand crafted to the high tech, and meet the artists, examine their techniques, lives and
influences plus the history of the fascinating streets where their work can be found.
