S1CS1. Students will be aware of the importance of curiosity, honesty,
openness, and skepticism in science and will exhibit these traits in their
own efforts to understand how the world works. a. Raise questions
about the world around them and be willing to seek answers to some of
the questions by making careful observations and measurements and
trying to figure things out.
Students will observe wind and explore the effects it has on the earth.
Objective of the
activity
Materials Needed
Scarves
Popsicle sticks
Rubberbands
Teacher Directions
Create with students a “scarf kite” by simply tying one corner of a scarf
to a popsicle stick with a rubberband. On a windy day, take students
outside with their “scarf kites” and let them explore the ways the wind
blows their scarves. Lead a question and answer session, allowing
students to draw their own conclusions and ask their own questions.
Student Directions
As a class, each student will take their scarf kite outside and explore
the effects of the wind on the scarf. Students will ask questions they
develop while outside and discuss with each other what they saw
through their exploration.
