YOGA WORKSHOP WITH CIARA CULLEN
from the Clare Island Yoga Center (Ireland)
BREATH BY BREATH: the importance of breath awareness in Yoga
Brussels, Saturday the 6th and Sunday the 7th of December 2014
Ciara Cullen has been practicing yoga for over 20 years and teaching for over 15 years. She
has studied with a number of senior teachers throughout the world, adding up to more
than 1000 hours of direct teaching. She practiced and taught ashtanga vinyasa yoga for
more than a decade, studying with Shri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, as well as John Scott,
Graeme Northfield and then Nancy Gilgoff who her came to Clare Island, Ireland (where
she and her partner have been running a yoga retreat centre for the last 12 years
www.yogaretreats.ie) to teach both primary and second series adjustment clinics.
Over the last nine years, her practice has evolved into a deep, slow mindful integration of
asana, breath work and meditation inspired by her teacher, Rossella Baroncini (Florence,
Italy), a direct student of Vanda Scaravelli, as well as the classical hatha teachings of
Acharaya Vankatesha and Hema (Mysore), and her mindfulness meditation practice and
teacher training (with Martin Aylward and Mark Coleman) in Devon, UK.
Ciara was Francesca’s very first Yoga teacher, and she comes to see us in Brussels for the
second time. Do not miss this unique opportunity to study with this very experienced and
wonderful teacher!
Content of the workshop
Morning sessions : traditional Mysore style Ashtanga yoga classes. Ciara’s intuitive approach
and subtle tips regarding breathing and alignment will offer you a different insight into your
personal practice, and will be a precious tool to help you evolve your personal practice.
Afternoon sessions : Breath by Breath
This unique workshop provides students with the opportunity to look more closely at the
workings of the breath while doing both simple as well as more challenging asana, including
standing postures, forward bends, twists, backbends and arm balances. Learning to work
with the breath more efficiently can transform one's practice, helping to ease unnecessary
tension and aiding with alignment and flexibility. There will also be instructions and practice
of mindfulness meditation as well as tips as to how to integrate mindfulness into one's daily
life.
During the two sessions, we will explore :
 the natural breath: how to cultivate awareness, experiencing the breathing body
 the directed breath, diaphragmatic breathing, moving the breath to different parts of
the body
 the practiced breath: deliberately working with and changing the breath to effect our
physical, mental and emotional states.
The afternoon workshop will be of great benefit to Ashtanga practitioners who often
develop very unhelpful, habitual patterns with their breathing. Yoga students from other
backgrounds are also welcome, as the integration of breath awareness to the body and mind
is beneficial to all traditions and individual practices, having the potential to transform not
only our yoga practice but our overall health and well-being.
