BIG EYE LANCE TEAM APPLICATION
Being a part of the Big Eye Lance Team is an incredibly
rewarding and fun experience. You’ll have the opportunity to
engage with students, faculty, staff, and visitors in an exciting,
fun way helping to build campus pride and school spirit.
Desired Characteristics


There are 2 main roles of the Big Eye Lance Team:
1. Big Eye Lance
2. Big Eye’s Assistant


Big Eye Lance:
Big Eye Lance is an ambassador to UH Hilo. His role is to
increase the energy at various school events, encourage students
to show their school pride, create a deeper connection with the
institution, increase school spirit in all areas of campus, and
become a symbol for students to recognize and connect with.
Big Eye Assistants
As Big Eye Lance’s Assistant you will be the main means of
communication between Big Eye Lance and the event
participants (Big Eye Lance doesn't speak). The health and safety
of all of our staff is of utmost importance and it will be your
responsibility to help Big Eye Lance stay safe during events.
You’ll also coordinate the logistics of Big Eye’s appearance and
help to ensure that everything goes smoothly.

Required Qualifications

o Inseam: 30-32”

Big Eye Lance Team Position Description
Minimum Qualifications







Must be a full time UH-Hilo student throughout the 2015-2016 academic year
Must have completed at least one year at UH-Hilo by June 2015
Have and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
Have a clear judicial record
Must have personal health insurance
Must own a personal pair of black basketball/tennis or running shoes to use during appearances.
Due to costume restrictions, to play the role of Big Eye Lance, candidate must have the
following measurements:
o Height: 5’9” – 6’0
o Weight: 190 - 220 lbs
o Chest: 42-46”
o Waist: 38-46”
o Hips: 42-44”
o Inseam: 30-32”
Desired Qualification:











Willing to perform wacky promotional activities
Must be highly energetic and in good physical condition.
Well organized and flexible to meet time, priority and workload demands.
Motivated with the desire to gain experience in enhancing school spirit.
Able to interact through non-verbal actions
Comfortable performing in front of large crowds
Must be able to wear heavy costume, and able to walk (and act) for long periods of time with
restricted vision
Able to analyze and interpret common social expressions relating to Big Eye Lance.
Some experience is preferred, but not required
Hours




Primarily night and weekend work will be required, but not exclusively.
Available to work throughout the academic year
Must be available at least 3 evenings and/or weekends per week
Must be able to work as requested. Will be notified at minimum 1 week in advance.
Big Eye Lance Responsibilities







Must be able to work in both the Big Eye Lance costume as well as a Big Eye Lance Assistant
Develop and enhance the costume, accessories, and character of Big Eye Lance.
Personally interact and energetically engage with the audience.
Perform choreographed cheer/dance routines and create skits and other forms of mascot-related
entertainment and crowd interaction.
Participate in promotions, including contests, photo ops, t-shirt toss, etc.
Big Eye Lance will be invited to many types of events, not exclusively athletic events. Must be
able to adapt Big Eye Lance’s character to meet the needs of each of these diverse types of events.
Care for and manage the costume including cleaning and notifying the Associate Director of any
damage that needs to be fixed in a timely fashion.

Performance Expectations











Arrive at event 30 minutes prior to start time, in costume 15 minutes prior to start time.
Meet and greet fans prior to and after the event or as requested.
Must maintain discretion. The identity of the person(s) inside the costume is a closely guarded secret. You
will not provide your name or contact information to anyone outside of New Student Programs in relation
to your performance as Big Eye Lance.
Big Eye Lance has no verbal skills. Therefore, use appropriate non-verbal cues/gestures
Never speak while in costume, except to an accompanying Assistant in hushed tones
Never dress/undress/remove head in public, your identity should be kept secret at all times!
When at athletic events, never degrade game officials, student-athletes or the opposing party’s mascot
You are an Ambassador for the university, your behavior is a direct reflection on UH Hilo. Therefore you’ll
abide by good conduct on and off campus.
Follow the UH Hilo Student Code of Conduct.
Be aware of the limitations of the costume
If for any reason a team member is unable to attend a function to which they are committed, he/she is
responsible for finding another team member to replace them; the trade must be approved at least 24 hours
prior to the event.
Additional Assistant Responsibilities
















Accompany and support Big Eye Lance at events
Ensure individual in Big Eye Lance costume is hydrated
Observe crowd and the environment for any safety issues and respond appropriately as needed.
Prevent unnecessary / unwanted interaction between public and Big Eye Lance
Observe Big Eye Lance body language for signs of stress and respond appropriately (i.e. enforce
breaks)
Big Eye Lance has no verbal skills. Therefore, be aware of appropriate non-verbal cues/gestures
and refrain from engaging Big Eye Lance in a conversation while in public.
Carry the Big Eye Lance Care Bag
Due to limited visibility with the costume, guide Big Eye Lance to different locations as needed
Responsible for making sure Big Eye Lance stays on schedule at events.
Interact with fans in a friendly and knowledgeable manner.
Assist with motivating crowds
Assist in planning, coordinating and implementing all entertainment and presentation elements
Assist in the execution of contests and promotions performed during events, including skits
Prepare all props, prizes and additional items used for presentation purposes at each event
Provide logistical assistance to Big Eye Lance during appearances
Ensure mascot costume is properly fitted.
Compensation





The Big Eye Lance Team is not a paid position. This is not a “job”.
We’re looking for UH Hilo students who have an overwhelming sense of campus pride and want
to be a part of the team that will engage and excite the campus community promoting UH Hilo
pride.
Being part of the Big Eye Lance Team is something you can put on your resume showing your
ability to work with large crowds and on small teams.
You may be able to use this position to fulfill volunteer hours if you
need some for your scholarship or another program.
Members of the Big Eye Lance Team will be provided with Vulcan
swag and other UH Hilo related gear & opportunities.
