Part V SANS 10400 – Space heating
Part V of SANS 10400 serves as a guideline to the design and construction of any
flue pipe, chimney, hearth or fireplace
Any system of space heating in a building must be designed, constructed and
installed as to operate safely and any flue,flue pipe or chimney used shall be
designed to safely remove any smoke or noxious gases produced.
Chimney & Flue pipes must not cause a fire hazard to,adjacent material in its
installation and design
A chimney or flue pipe cannot be connected to a shaft or duct which forms part of a
ventilation system
No other services may be connected close to a chimney or flue if it may be affected
by the heat
No combustible material must be built within 200mm of the inside of a chimney
because of the heat.
A chimney wall must be at least 190mm thick and not reduced to less than 90mm.
If the wall construction is less than 190mm then the flue must be lined with a material
which will withstand any action of the flue gases and will resist, without cracking or
softening, the temperature to which it may be subjected. The flue lining must extend
through the full height of such a chimney.
Any chimney more than 4m in height must be designed in accordance with SANS
10400 Part B.
The point of outlet of a chimney must be a minimum of 1m above the highest point of
contact between the chimney and the roof or 1m above the highest point of a window
or roof light that can be opened or a ventilation inlet situated in a roof or external wall
where the horizontal distance from the nearest point of such window, roof light or
opening to a vertical line through the Centre of such chimney outlet is less than 2.3m
The point of outlet of a chimney must be a minimum of 1m above the eaves level in
the case of a chimney that passes within 1.5m of the nearest wall of such building.
On the gable end of such building the chimney shall not extend less the
An 600mm above the highest point of such gable end.
Every fireplace shall have a hearth made if non combustible material.
A hearth must nit extend more than 500mm in front of the fog rate or fire basket and
not less than 300mm beyond each side.
No combustible material shall be built into a hearth.
