Course Description: Compound and coordinate bilingualism; attitudes, motivation,
etc.; functions of languages in multilingual settings; problems of newly-independent,
multilingual nations in establishing national and standardized languages; analysis of
bilingual speech; problems of educating minority groups in this country whose native
language is not English. 3 sh.
Required Textbook: The Bilingualism Reader (2nd Edition), Li Wei, Editor. London,
Great Britain: Routledge.
Course Requirements: Complete all readings and assignments to be posted to
Blackboard. Purchase The Bilingualism Reader (Edited by Li Wei), 2nd Edition.
Additional reading materials will be uploaded to BB. Your instructor will set up dyads,
whose members will be responsible for presenting a summary and evaluation of a
specific chapter/article assigned to them. Please read all course-related email from your
instructor. I will try to keep this to a minimum, but you need to check your BB email
regularly.
Assessment and Evaluation: Your grade will depend on the following: Attendance and
informed-class participation (10); F2F or synchronous small-group presentations of
articles assigned and postings to the Discussion Board (20); Mid-term Test (multiple
choice, true/false, and short-answer essays) (14); semester bilingual research project to be
carried out in small-groups (three students maximum) (36); final exam (20).
Classroom Behavior: Please do not eat or drink in the classroom. Do not use your cell
phone, Tablet, or iPad while your instructor or classmates are speaking or making a
presentation. This is disrespectful behavior that shall be duly noted by your instructor.
If you are sick (with a cold or the flu), please do not come to class. You can contact
me via FaceTime at cassandra8@comcast.net. .
My preferred mode of communication is via SMS texting. Please TEXT ME if you
have a problem and want to meet with me during my office hours or via our BB virtual
classroom. My cell phone number is 201-341-0319. Refrain from bombarding me with
email messages. I will not have a chance to reply to you because this is a very large
class.

You will need a headset or headphones in order to avoid creating an annoying echo
effect. These synchronous sessions start at 1:00 p.m. on the four Fridays indicated
below.
