Goal: Sustain a 100% American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Initial Certification
Examination in General Pediatric pass rate for our first-time test taking residents
Objective: To have a curriculum that is comprehensive, intuitive, and easily
upgradeable to help our residents and program achieve this goal
POC: Maj (Dr) Susan Whiteway will manage the curriculum with assistance from the
Chief Residents and Resident Advisors
Methods:
A. Chief Resident’s Monthly Board Review
a. Using twice monthly quizzes on articles sent out the week prior, residents
will assess their knowledge on Pediatrics in Review (PIR), ABP Content,
and PREP questions in individual, team, and group based learning
settings. The Chief Residents will be responsible for devising the weekly
quizzes and accompany teaching tools (e.g., PowerPoint slides).
b. The Chief Residents will devise a longitudinal, rotating bi-monthly
curriculum to cover nearly all ABP content in one academic year
i. The ABP content outline will be reviewed yearly for any changes
c. Bi-monthly quizzes will be tracked as part of the RAT curriculum
B. Longitudinal, mandatory PREP questions
a. Each resident will be required to complete PREP questions on-line via
Pedialink. Interns will complete one year’s worth by the end of their 1st
year with a >50% correct score
b. PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents will complete two years’ worth of PREP
questions on-line via Pedialink (one year’s worth every six months) as a
part of their board review with an expectation of >60% correct score in the
PGY-2 year and >70% correct in the PGY-3 year.
c. Residents will be held accountable for completion of these questions at
both the mid-year and end-of-year evaluations.
C. Longitudinal, MedStudy Series Reading Plan
a. Each resident may use the MedStudy Series to supplement their
professional growth on a self-paced reading program
b. Useful while on the corresponding rotation
D. June Transition to Practice (JTTP)
a. MedStudy Board Review Course – PGY-3 residents will complete the
entire two week course during the JTTP
San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium
Pediatric Residency
b. PGY-3 residents will give a lecture on an assigned ABP content
specification for the entire residency in lieu of the 0800 hrs lectures
E. Faculty Lectures
a. ABP content will be specifically reviewed as part of all faculty lectures
F. Advisor Involvement
a. Review of self-paced reading plan and PREP question completion/percent
correct
b. Assistance with any remediation due to less than expected In-training
Exam (ITE) performance
G. Resident Binders
a. Each resident will be given a personal binder to which ABP content,
frequently missed ITE questions, PIR articles, Chief Resident’s teaching
materials, and other useful board prep materials will be added throughout
the year. The goal would be to have pertinent material from each of the 35
ABP content areas (detailed below in Table 1) separated into easily
reviewable sections compiled for each resident to assist personal board
review.
