In addition to filling prescriptions, pharmacists make sure the drugs is right for the illness and that the dose
is appropriate based on the patient’s age, gender and weight. Pharmacists also monitor the compatibility of
the prescription drugs a patient is taking to minimize drug interactions, making sure medications are not
working at cross purposes or duplicate treatment.
The pharmacist may recommend to the prescribing physician changes to drug therapy to improve patient
outcomes or reduce costs for the patient.
Pharmacists are the medication therapy experts. Texas needs an infrastructure for a system that properly
uses pharmacists’ knowledge, skills and legal authorities and compensates pharmacists to maximize patient
outcomes through the safe, cost effective use of medications.

 Counseling of patients on how to take their medications including common adverse reactions for
which to watch;
 Assisting patients in selecting over-the-counter medications for minor illnesses or injuries;

Today, pharmacy school graduates have a minimum of four years of education in addition to a bachelor’s
degree – usually in a science field – plus a residency of one to two years. With eight to 10 years of
