Directions: The accuracy of a microscopic sketch is very
important to those studying microscopic organisms.
Part A – Measuring the Field of View
Part A – Measuring the Field of View
1. Obtain a micrometer slide – this slide contains a microscopic
ruler that can be used to measure the diameter of the field
of view.
2. Observe the micrometer and carefully sketch the ruler
exactly as it appears for each objective on your microscope
in the space provided at the right.
3. Be sure to show exactly how much space the ruler takes up
in the field of view or your measurements will be incorrect.
4. Determine the diameter of the field of view for each
objective.
Part B – Sketch and Measure Microscopic Organisms
1. Carefully sketch the specimens in the spaces provided on the
back.
2. Clearly label the title of each specimen.
3. Indicate the total magnification – use the greatest power
with which you can see the entire specimen.
4. Use colored pencils to accurately sketch the specimens, as
you see them in the microscope.
5. Compare the specimen to the field of view sketch at the
right under the same power.
6. Determine the size of the specimen using the following
formula:
