PROJECTS
CROSS-CURRICULAR—MATHEMATICS
You have volunteered to research the cost of three possible two-week vacation locations for your family.
Prepare a worksheet that will show the cost of each trip, including line items for transportation, hotel, car
rental, meals, activities, and any miscellaneous costs. Apply an AutoFormat to the data. Chart the
information for each vacation location.
Solutions will vary. Worksheet should include locations for three vacations -- each two weeks. Worksheet
should be formatted and should include a chart.
CROSS-CURRICULAR—SCIENCE
Prepare a spreadsheet that displays your weight on different planets. Use the Internet and other resources
to find information on how to determine relative gravity. The spreadsheet might have columns labeled
“Planet,” “Relative Gravity,” “Current Weight,” and “Planet Weight.” Include clip art in the spreadsheet
and format it as desired.
Solutions will vary.
CROSS-CURRICULAR—SOCIAL STUDIES
Use the Internet and other resources to research national parks within your state. Prepare a spreadsheet
that shows the name, location, distance from where you live from each park, the features of each park,
and if camping is available. Format the spreadsheet using AutoFormat. Sort the spreadsheet to show the
distance and location. Print the spreadsheet after each sort.
Solutions will vary.
CROSS-CURRICULAR—LANGUAGE ARTS
You have been asked to prepare a report on teen drug abuse. Use the Internet and other sources for your
research. Include statistical data as part of the written report. Present the statistical data in a spreadsheet. It
should include the top five drugs used by teenagers, the amount of money spent on drugs yearly, the
number of deaths yearly, and any other statistics that would support your report. Include a footer
containing the name of the report, the page number, and the date. Include clip art, and format the
spreadsheet as desired.
Solutions will vary.
WEB PROJECT
Locate a Web site that includes information about the periodic table of elements and create a worksheet
listing a minimum of 10 elements and their properties. The following should be included for each
element: abbreviations, boiling point, element symbols, melting point, number of protons, number of
neutrons. Create a chart that compares the physical properties each of the elements.
Solutions will vary depending on the ten elements selected.
TEAMWORK PROJECT
You and a classmate are to gather information regarding the top ten careers for the next decade. You
should collect data on projected need, current salary, expected salary, training needed, and cost of

EXPLORING Google
In many instances, converting units of measurement from one format to another can become a timeconsuming chore. Google’s calculator not only evaluates mathematical expressions, but also converts
many other units of measurement. For instance, using Google’s search box, you quickly can convert U.S.
currency to Euros, years into minutes, or a decimal number into binary. You can find information and
examples at www.google.com/help/calculator.html. At the end of the page, you can find a number of
expressions with which you can experiment. Additional information and examples also can be found at
www.googleguide.com/calculator.html.
After you complete your experimenting, try some conversions of your own. Create an Excel worksheet
that contains your name and two columns. The first column should contain the information to be
converted and the second column should contain the results of the conversion. The worksheet should
contain at least ten different types of conversions. Add a header with your name and date. Print a copy if
instructed to do so.
Solutions will vary.
