Objective/Title: Divide Decimals by Decimals

______Confident

______Ok

______Lost

Important Terms Quick Solve

Divisor: the number dividing into the dividend *

Dividend: the number being divided

*

Quotient: the answer to a division problem *

Practice Questions Divide. Then check

*Move the decimal point to the right in the divisor. Move the decimal in the divided the same number of places. Rewrite the problem with these changes.

*Put lines above the division bracket

*Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down

*Add zeros to the dividend until the answer ends with no remainders (if needed)

*Bring the decimal point straight up (if no number is in front of the decimal put a zero)

*Check your answer (use multiplication)

Notes and Examples

1. Move the decimal point to the right in the divisor (all the way to the end.) Move the decimal in the dividend the same number of places (this may not be the end of the number; that’s fine.) Rewrite the problem with these changes.

0.12 4 9. 2 6 original problem 012. 4 9 2 6. new problem

2 places right in both numbers

2. On the top of the division bracket: put lines above each number

_ _ _

012. 4 9 2 6. Keep the decimal in the dividend in case you need it

*12 cannot go into 4, so there will be no line above it. 12 can go into 49, so the first line goes above the nine and goes above all of the following numbers

3. Divide, multiply, subtact, and bring down as if the decimal was not there. Ignore until the decimal until the end.

4.Add zeros to the dividend (if needed.) Continue until bring down zeros one at a time until you get a difference of zero. You cannot have a remainder.

4 1 0 5 (quotient)

012 4926.0

5. Bring the decimal straight up into the answer.

410.5 (quotient)

12 4926.0

6. Check your answer

410.5 1 decimals

× 12 + 0 decimals

8210 1 decimal places in the answer

+ 41050

4926.0 this equals the dividend with my zero added
