Focused Clinical Activity – Level I
Concept: Evidence Based Practice
Instructions:
Part I - Pre-Clinical work
1. Prior to your clinical day, choose one of the below procedures to research at your clinical
site.
a. Nasogastric Tube Insertion (Verification of placement, maintenance, and use)
b. Foley Catheter Care (Including indications for placement, indications for
continuing when previously placed at another facility, & when to discontinue)
c. Use of Bed Alarms
d. Use of adult diapers
2. Prior to your clinical day, find and print two articles presenting Evidence-Based Practice
(EBP) focusing on your chosen subject above.
Part II - Day of Clinical
1. Divide into groups of 3-4 students with like subjects.
2. During clinical, locate and read the facility’s policy and procedure for your chosen subject.
3. Interview a member of the nursing staff about the facility’s usual practices for your chosen
subject.
Part III - Day of Clinical
1. Answer the following:
a. How many different articles did the group have in all? Do all of the articles agree
on evidence for the procedure? If not, how do they differ?
b. Does the facility’s procedure agree with the evidence presented in one or both
articles? If not, what are your thoughts on why the facility procedure differs?
c. Were there any differences in the usual practices of the facility and what was
presented in the articles? How about differences between the usual practices
and the facility policy?
2. Present your findings to your clinical group.
